University of Colorado at Colorado Springs

The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, one of four campuses in the CU system, is located in north-central Colorado Springs on 475 acres of land that is primed to be the focus of higher education in the 21st century.

Founded in 1965, UCCS now boasts over 9,000 students in its 21 undergraduate and 15 graduate programs. In just over 41 years, UCCS has grown from a small, commuter campus into the centerpiece of the University of Colorado's growth projections. With its other campuses landlocked, CU is looking to Colorado Springs to absorb the expected 15-20 percent increase in high school graduates over the next five years.

To accommodate that growth, UCCS has experienced a building boom over the past 10 years. During the first phase, the University opened its first 600-bed housing village in 1996-97 and added another 300-bed, apartment-style complex in 2005. Beside the state-of-the-art residence halls, a new classroom and office facility (Columbine Hall) as well as a day-care center (The UCCS Family Development Center) were erected. In addition, the Kraemer Family Library was more than doubled in size, the El Pomar Center was built and the University Center underwent a dramatic facelift.

But those projects were just the beginning. A new, multi-tiered parking facility was completed in 2006 and a massive addition to the engineering building has begun.

The school's athletic facilities are keeping pace with the growth of the rest of the campus. The Mountain Lion Field (softball) and Mountain Lion Stadium (soccer) were renovated and are now two of the finest facilities for their respective sports in the state. The new Gallogly Events Center for basketball and volleyball opened in January 2010.

The University's graduate and undergraduate programs place an emphasis on excellence and expanded opportunities. The UCCS School of Business is one of a select few in the nation in which both undergraduate and graduate students are exposed to an international curriculum. The School of Engineering, meanwhile, boasts one of the finest facilities in the region - including a 4,400 square-foot clean room. The Anechoic Chamber, used to study how microwaves behave in space, is just one of the outstanding facilities available to students at UCCS.

Traditional classroom instruction is supplemented by a variety of options, including CU-Net, an interactive instructional television network that broadcasts courses to homes and businesses in the community and includes telephone communication with instructors.
