Colorado Christian Wins 2007-08 Sportsmanship Cup

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- May 14, 2008 -- Colorado Christian University won the second annual Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Sportsmanship Cup.

The conference is in its second year with the sportsmanship awards program. Eight of the 19 sports that are sponsored by the RMAC receive points for the program: football, volleyball, women's basketball, men's basketball, women's soccer, men's soccer, softball and baseball. The scores are averaged because the number of sports at each school varies.

The RMAC Sportsmanship Cup award consists of a combination of two awards.

The first is the Team Award which is presented to the team (student-athletes, coaches and bench area) who displays the best sportsmanship throughout their season. This award is based on the evaluations that are filled out by the game officials following each season. Officials from each sport selected the top three institutions that they felt displayed the best sportsmanship involving the participating student-athletes, coaches and bench area.

The second award is the Institutional Award. This award is based on the overall spectator sportsmanship (enthusiasm, spirit/innovation, and overall sportsmanship of the spectators). During all-conference voting, head coaches from each sport voted for the top three institutions they felt best displayed sportsmanship.

The Sportsmanship Cup is awarded to the institution which has the highest combined award total average from the Team and Institutional Awards. Colorado Christian compiled an average total of 19.3 points, followed by Nebraska-Kearney with 14.3 points, and Regis University with 12.8 points to round out the top three point averages.

The following are the winners of the Team Award: Football - Fort Lewis; Volleyball - UC-Colorado Springs; Women's Basketball - Colorado Christian; Men's Basketball - Colorado Mines; Women's Soccer - Regis; Men's Soccer - Fort Lewis; Softball - Adams State; and Baseball - Colorado Christian.
