He his coaching career at Western with a 15-5 (.750) RMAC record and a 33-12 (.733) overall record. Dalton’s overall winning percentage of .733, remains the best among football coaches in school history. During 1963 he transformed the Mountaineers into one of the best programs in the country. His 1964 team saw a perfect season going undefeated in conference for the second consecutive year (3-0) and 9-0 overall. The result was a trip to the Mineral Bowl (Small College Championship Game) where his team fell to North Dakota State 14-13. After his time with the Mountaineers, Dalton coached in the NFL for the Denver Broncos, Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs, and Houston Oilers (1974-1986). He was a part of the Broncos’ staff when the 1986 team went to Super Bowl XXI. From 1987 to 1988 he was the offensive coordinator for the Colorado State, then held the same position at University of Northern Colorado (1989-1999). He became UNC’s head coach in 2000 until retiring in 2005. Dalton guided the Bears to two NCAA Division II national titles in 1996 and 1997. Link To Full Feature Story
