Adams State, Cross Country and Track & Field, 1988-1992


Maas was a six-time NAIA National Champion during his years at Adams State. He won a title each year, which included the 1989 Outdoor 1500-meter run (3:51.66), 1990 Indoor Mile (4:07.99), 1990 Indoor Distance Medley Relay (10:08.00), 1991 Outdoor 1500-meter run (3:45.31), 1992 Outdoor 1500-meter run (3:43.11), and 1992 Indoor 2-mile run (9:00.10). Maas was also a 12 time All-American and was the leading member of back-to-back NAIA National Championship Cross Country teams in 1988 and 1989. He guided Adams State to its only two NAIA National Indoor Track and Field titles in 1990 and 1992. Maas’ record still stands in the Adams State record books in the 1500-meter run with a time of 3:39.64 and as well as the DMR team that set a record time of 9:42.70. Following his collegiate career, he became a 1992 Olympic Trials Finalist. Maas was inducted into the Adams State Hall of Fame in 2004. He and his teammates from the 1990 and 1992 Indoor Track and Field national championship teams were inducted in to the RMAC Hall of Fame in 2013. Maas passed away on August 2016, at the age of 47.
