At Adams State University, it is extremely common to find a pack of distance runners that have achieved some of those elite honors. At the forefront of that pack is former Grizzly harrier, Daniel Caulfield. Following a storied running career at Adams State, Caulfield is set to be inducted into the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Hall of Fame as a part of its 2022 class. A competitor at every level, Caulfield enters the RMAC Hall of Fame with a truly expansive resume that ranges from representing his country to coaching runners at the national level. In his time with the Grizzlies, Caulfield stitched together an incredible career that consisted of 10 All-America honors and four NCAA national championships. He set the Adams State program record in the 800-meter event and was named to the RMAC Men's Cross Country All-Century team. While proving himself as a staple for a highly-successful Adams State program, Caulfield never plateaued and consistently returned to Europe in the summers to continue his training efforts throughout his career. It would be difficult to say that Caulfield peaked as a collegiate athlete as he earned the title of European Cup Champion in the 800m and 1,500m events, was twice named the runner-up at the Millrose Games and finished among the top-10 competitors at the 2001 World Indoor Championships in Lisbon, Portugal. "Not only was he just a great athlete, he was just a great person," former ASU teammate Jason Kayne said of Caulfield. "He was probably the most inspirational person I met there, and I met some really inspirational people that came from all over the world to train. He just had an amazing ability to motivate and inspire that I had never met anyone like that before." Caulfield's inspirational attitude was present for each of the Grizzlies' cross country titles in the 1993 and 1994 seasons. Upon concluding his collegiate career, he then utilized his ability to inspire by stepping into the coaching ranks for the Grizzlies. Caulfield wasted little time finding success and helped the Grizzlies to four women's cross country national championships and two men's national titles. While the athletic accomplishments, national titles and All-America honors were nothing short of incredible, Caulfield has since successfully turned his passion for running into a career. In addition to his coaching success at Adams State, has since completed 16 seasons as a coach at California University of Pennsylvania. Throughout his time at the helm of the Vulcan's cross country and track and field programs, Caulfield has mentored 23 All-Americans and earned two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors.
