Administrative/Coaching Accomplishments:

Harry W. Hughes was known as the Dean of Rocky Mountain Coaches and served as the director of athletics at Colorado State University from 1911 to 1953. As football coach he
won 8 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships, 5 Track Championships and served on the NCAA National Rules Committee from 1926 to 1953. He is a member of the
Colorado Sports Hall of Fame, Colorado State University Sports Hall of Fame and Helms Amateur Athletic Hall of Fame. Hughes trained Glenn Morris who won the decathlon in the
1936 Olympics along with having quarterback Kenny Hyde on the 1925 Associated Press 3rteam All-America and Dan Beattie on the 1929 Track All-American team. Hughes also trained Chester Cruikshank, Forrest Harvey and Ivan Dykeman as track All-Americans; Dykeman won the 1931 national championship in the hammer. Two of Hughes' players, Glenn Morris and Carlyle Vickers, were chosen to play in the EastlWest Shrine football game. He was an advocate of the amateur game and promoted fair play. Hughes also served as a member of the board of director of the American Football Coaches Association in the 1920s and was a charter member of the organization. He promoted athletics in Colorado by conducting a coach's clinic beginning in 1920. The current stadium at Colorado State University is named in honor of
Harry Hughes.
