A two-time All-American in football and three-time All-American in wrestling, Carwin is regarded as one of the best athletes in RMAC history. Carwin was rated as the second-best defensive player in RMAC history by the Centennial selection committee. As a middle linebacker for the Mountaineers, Carwin set a school record for tackles with 161 in 1996, while being named the RMAC Player of the Year. On the wrestling mat, Carwin was the NCAA Division II heavyweight champion in 1999. He was also national runner-up in 1996 and 1997. Also impressive in the classroom, Carwin was a three-time NCAA DII Wrestling Academic First Team. After graduating from Western State, Carwin became an assistant wrestling coach at Colorado Mines, where he earned another B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. Carwin became an engineer in his hometown of Greeley, and went on to become the interim heavyweight champion in the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship).
