Prior to arriving at ASC, Cotton served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, touring in the South Pacific. In 1950, Cotton played for the Denver Nuggets, during the first ever season of the NBA. The team disbanded after one season. Cotton was part of the U.S. Olympic Committee from 1960 to 1972 and President of the NAIA coaches association.
