Kay spent more than 40 years as a student-athlete, coach and administrator at Colorado Mines. Kay was an All-American in football playing on the offensive and defensive lines. Kay was also a three-time letterwinner in wrestling and President of his junior and senior classes. After graduating from CSM with a degree in Engineering, Kay joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, where he served for two years. He then returned to Mines as assistant football coach and head swimming coach. In 1969, Kay became the head football coach and went on to win a school record 84 games during the next 26 years. Kay was named RMAC Coach of the Year in 1975 and 1979. In 1995, Kay became the Director of Athletics before stepping down in 2004. During his time as Director of Athletics and football coach, Kay was also the Mayor of Golden from 1988 to 1995.
