The 1954 Mountaineers are the only Western State football team to finish a season undefeated, going 10-0 overall and 8-0 in the RMAC. This was the first WSC team to win an RMAC title in any sport. The team was led by the late Bill Rhodes (RMAC Hall of Fame, class of 2006) who was named All-American and was second in the nation in rushing for 1125 yards. In addition to Rhodes, Jim Richard, Theron Bradford and Frank Oyster were named All-RMAC. The team was coached by Willard “Pete” Pederson and were inducted into the Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame in 2003. They are just the second football team inducted into the RMAC Hall of Fame, joining the 1956 Montana State national championship team.
