A running back at Western State College, Rhodes played for the Mountaineers from 1953-56.  He was named an All-American in 1955-56 and earned All-American honorable mention status in 1954.  Rhodes was an unanimous All-RMAC selection in his four years at WSC, averaging 8.5 yards per carry.  As a senior, he led the nation in rushing yards with 1,200 while scoring 12 touchdowns.  In his freshman campaign, Rhodes rushed for 857 yards and 13 touchdowns.  He ranked second in the nation as a sophomore and junior in rushing yards, compiled 1,125 yards and 15 touchdowns in 1954, and 1,112 yards and 14 touchdowns in 1956.  At one time, Rhodes held national records for most rushing yards in a game (327), longest run (97 yards), and career yards (4,294).  He graduated from Western State College in 1956. Rhodes passed away in June of 2008.
