The 1971 Adams State College National Athletic Intercollegiate Association championship team recorded a team score of 196. Members of the 1971 NAIA championship team and their overall finish were Steve Vining (12th place), Tim Ramey (17th place), Dave Wood (41st place), Milt Place (67th place), Mark Weeks (85th place), Norm Roberts (99th place), and Charlie Vigil (134th place). Joe Vigil, who was head coach at the time, was on sabbatical leave at the University of New Mexico working on his doctorate degree. Larry Jeffryes held the position of interim head coach and guided Adams State to the the national championship title. He was chosen the NAIA Coach of the Year. The championship race was held in Liberty, Mo. The 1971 NAIA championship team was the first of eight championships - no other school in NAIA has won more men's cross country championships.
