NEW ORLEANS, LA- Adams State University distance runner Alicia Nelson was named the Division II Women's National Athlete of the Week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Nelson competed against Division I competition in both the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, California and the Beach Invitational. She finished in third place in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:22.70 at the Beach Invitational. In the 5000 meters at the Mt. Sac Relays, Nelson finished in 10
th place with a time of 16:13.94.
Nelson now has the number one time in the nation in Division II in three events. Her time of 4:22.70 in the 1500 meters at the Beach Invitational surpassed the NCAA Automatic qualifying time of 4:23.00. Nelson's time of 16:13.94 in the 5000 meters at the Mt. Sac Relays also surpassed the NCAA Automatic qualifying time of 16:20.00. She holds the number one time in the 5000 meters by more than 20 seconds over the second best time. Nelson earned the number one time in the 3000 meter steeplechase at the Stanford Invitational in early April. Her time of 9:59.83 surpassed the NCAA Automatic qualifying time by over 25 seconds.
Nelson was also named a USTFCCCA Athlete of the Week during the 2013 outdoor track season.
