GUNNISON, Colo. - Western State Colorado University and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference mourn the tragic loss of freshman wrestler, Dammion Heard (Fr., Fort Worth, Texas) this week.  Heard was a valuable member to the Mountaineer wrestling squad, Western Athletic Department and University community.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Dammion," Athletics Director, Dr. Greg Waggoner said.  "He was a valuable member of the Mountaineer Family and we all extend our thoughts and prayers to the Heard family as they absorb the grief of this tragedy.  As we process through some of life's challenges that are difficult, it is important that this draws us closer as a family, especially as we support Coach Van Hee and the wrestling team through this trying time."

Heard was a vital part to the 2013-14 Western wrestling team that won the RMAC Dual Title and RMAC/Region IV Championship.  As the starting 125-pound wrestler, Heard went 10-12 with three falls this past season as a true freshman.  Heard's teammates will remember him for his drive and his heart while competing on the mat for the Mountaineers.

"We, the Mountaineer wrestling family, are devastated by the loss of Dammion and will miss him dearly," Head Wrestling Coach, Miles Van Hee said.  "His big personality touched everyone on the team and on campus. He made a big impact on our wrestling team, fans, family and friends that will last forever. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dammion's family. He will forever 'Be Heard.' Thanks Dammion."

Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Commissioner Chris Graham added, “The loss of a student-athlete with so much promise and so much to give is equally heartbreaking and distressing. The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference extends its deepest sympathies to Dammion’s family, friends and teammates.”

A collection box for cards and other expressions of sympathy will be placed in the main lobby of Paul Wright Gym and will be delivered to the family.
