GUNNISON, Colo. – Western wins the 2017 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship title, despite challenging weather conditions in Gunnison, Colorado.
 
The Mountaineers collectively scored 150.5 points for their ninth title in school history. Adams State finished second in the standings with 129 points. Colorado Mesa came in third (124 points) and Chadron State and UCCS finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
 
Western’s 4x100m relay team kicked off Day 3 with a second-place finish in 40.91. Several top three performances followed as the Mountaineer’s Simon Hayes won the men’s 110m hurdles with a time of 14.68. Teammate Kyree Gerstle-Goodman came in second (14.73). Elijah Gilbert placed third in the 100m dash in 10.64. Robin Butler took third in the men’s 800m run in 1:50.79. Alex Schaffer was named RMAC Champion in the 400m hurdles with a time of 52.44. C.J. Schutt took second in men’s javelin (52.37). Colby Stinson won men’s shot put with a toss of 17.32m.
 
Day 3 Results by event:
 
4x100m Relay
Adams State claimed the 4x100m relay title with a time of 40.74. Western took second and UCCS placed third (41.24).
 
1500m Run
Evan Verbal of Colorado Christian was crowned RMAC Champion in the 1500m run. Verbal ran a winning time of 4:05.01. CSU-Pueblo’s Dante Carter came in second (4:05.58) and Colorado Mesa’s John Cusick took third (4:06.48).
 
110m Hurdles
Western went one and two in the 110m hurdles, led by Hayes. Placing third was Colorado Mesa’s D’Angelo Foster (14.77).
 
400m Dash
The men’s 400m dash was led by UCCS’ Caleb Simons. He crossed the line in 47.36. CSU-Pueblo’s Dueth Vassell finished right behind in 47.43 and Colorado School of Mines’ Hunter Arnell took third (47.61).
 
100m Dash
Adams State went one and two in the 100m dash. Micah Ballantyne won the event in 10.59 and teammate Ian Kerr took second with a time of 10.61. Western’s Elijah would place third.
 
800m Run
UCCS’ William Mayhew was name RMAC Champion in the 800m run. Mayhew clocked a time of 1:50.34 for the win. Adams State’s Austin Anaya came in second (1:50.76) and Western’s Butler placed third.
 
400m Hurdles
Western’s Schaffer had a winning time in the 400m hurdles. Black Hills State’s Tristan Hepp finished second (52.96) and Colorado Mesa’s Marc Garcia took third in 53.38.
 
200m Dash
ASU’s Ballantyne earned another RMAC title clocking a time of 21.41 in the 200m dash. MSU Denver’s Julian Dulaney took second (21.43) and ASU’s Kerr placed third (21.45).
 
5000m Run
Adams State’s Sydney Gidabuday and Chandler Reid placed first (15:42.99) and second (15:43.41), respectively.
 
4x400m Relay
Colorado School of Mines won the men’s 4x400m relay. The Orediggers crossed the line in 3:14.23 with a team consisting of Austin Smith, Ryan Morningstar, Hunter Arnell, and Bryce Frazee. CSU-Pueblo took silver with a time of 3:15.38. Adams State rounds out the top three with a time of 3:16.31.
 
Javelin
In javelin, Colorado Mesa’s Greggory Payseno won the event with a mark of 53.47m. Western’s Schutt took second (52.37m) and Michael Barbeau of Colorado Mesa finished third (50.50m).
 
Shot Put
Following Western’s Stinson’s first place finish was Adams State’s Samuel Reid. Reid took second in shot put with a toss of 17.08m. Chadron State’s Blake Jacobs took third with 16.77m.
 
Triple Jump
The Eagle’s Dez Smith was named RMAC Champion in triple jump with a mark of 14.22m. UCCS’ William Ross came in second (14.15m) and CSU-Pueblo’s Ron Sweeten claimed third (14.01m).
 
High Jump
Due to weather conditions, men’s high jump resumed from yesterday’s competition. Adams State’s Wyatt Cunningham won the event, clearing a height of 2.05m. South Dakota Mines’ Nathan Courtney tied at 2.00m, but earns second placed based on attempts. Competitor Tristan Hepp of Black Hills State would finish third (2.00m).
