COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.—The third week of men’s Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) basketball action saw winning streaks snapped and all-around great performances.
TEAM HIGHLIGHTS
- Colorado School of Mines extended its RMAC leading win streak to seven games with wins over Colorado Christian, 97-80 and Regis, 80-73.
- In the win over the Cougars the Mines defense stepped up big in the second half holding Colorado Christian to 28.6% shooting from the field.
- Black Hills State also remained undefeated in conference action defeating Adams State, 85-69 and Fort Lewis 70-66 in overtime.
- The Yellow Jackets used a 13-2 run to start the second half to get back into the game after trailing by 12 points to start the half. The Sky Hawks found themselves down three with less then 13 seconds left when Kireed Johnson was fouled taking a three-point shot. He calmly stepped up to the line and sunk all three to send the game into overtime. Black Hills State would come up clutch at the charity stripe in extra time to secure the victory.
- New Mexico Highlands bounced back from a defeat at Dixie State to take down Westminster, 79-70.
- The Cowboys would build their lead to 53-29 early in the second half but the Griffins would not go down without a fight clawing its way back going on a 30-13 run to cut the lead to 66-59 with under 10 minutes to go. New Mexico Highlands would go 6-6 from the free throw line late in the game to ice the comeback and earn the victory.
- MSU Denver picked up two close wins over Colorado Mesa (73-68) and Western (86-75) to push its winning streak to three.
- In the win over Colorado Mesa the Road Runners defense stepped up and forced seven straight stops to start the second half and used a 12-0 run to pad its lead. The Mavericks would respond late in the half and bring the game to within one with 26.5 seconds remaining. Freshman Marcus Jefferson came through in the clutch as he connected on his free throws to hold on for the win.
- The University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) picked up two victories by a combined seven points with wins over Regis, 84-80 and Colorado Christian, 73-70.
- It was a back-and-forth affair between the Mountain Lions and Rangers as the game featured 12 lead changes and 12 ties as UCCS made a late layup and converted its free throws to earn the win.
- In the close victory over the Cougars it was Padiet Wang who scored six straight points with 1:33 left in the game to give the Mountain Lions the win.
- Colorado Mesa continued its hot shooting connecting on 55% of its shots to down Chadron State 79-69.
- Chadron State saw its full squad suit up versus Western as the injury bug hit them early in the season. The Eagles would convert 16-19 free throws in the second half to defeat the Mountaineers 77-58.
- Adams State was red hot from beyond the arc in its tilt against South Dakota Mines shooting 50% (11-22) on its way to the 75-61 victory.
- Dixie State, Westminster and South Dakota Mines all picked up a split over the weekend to bring their conference record to 2-3.
RMAC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
- Tyler Oliver posted a double-double in the first half against Adams State and averaged 19.5 points per game to be named this week’s RMAC Offensive Player of the Week! In the two games he averaged 10.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and recorded one steal to help lead the Yellow Jackets to two wins.
- Davere Creighton of Adams State had an all-around great performance this weekend to be named this week’s RMAC Defensive Player of the Week! Creighton averaged 21.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.50 steals and 1.0 blocked shot for the Grizzlies including a 33-point performance against South Dakota Mines.
INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS
- Jacob McCord of Westminster shot an impressive 59% (17-29) from the field and averaged 20.5 points per game. He also recorded 11.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game including a 25 points, 16 performance against CSU-Pueblo.
- Raquan Mitchell of New Mexico Highlands averaged 20.5 points per game including going 4-for-4 in the final minute against Westminster to clinch the win (both one-and-one situations).
- Marquel Beasley led the Fort Lewis offense in two games with 33 points, scoring double-figures in both games, while shooting 52 percent from the field, pulling down eight rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals.
- Corey Seng of CSU-Pueblo produved back-to-back double-doubles as he averaged 13.5 points, 10.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists and 1.0 blocks per game.
- Alex Semadeni paced the Skyhawks with 25 points on 9-20 shooting, 1-3 from three and 6-7 at the foul line. He also grabbed 10 rebounds, dished out four assists, added two blocks and four steals.
- Dalton Walker came off the bench to lead UCCS in scoring averaging 19 points, 4.5 assists & 3 rebounds per game while shooting a solid 54.5 percent from the floor (12-22) and 6-13 from long range (.462).
- Kendall McIntosh averaged 14 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1 block for MSU Denver.
- South Dakota Mines’s Logan Elers averaged 15 points a game, 2.5 assists and went 12-22 from the field to shoot 55 percent and a perfect 7-7 on free throws.
- Garrett Carter of MSU Denver Shot 72.2% from the field (13-18) while averaging 15.0 points, 6.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game.
- Padiet Wang of UCCS blocked two shots and stole the ball 3 times while pulling down 12 rebounds and scoring 26 points.
- CSU-Pueblo’s Gavin Liggett averaged 18.5 points per game including going 11-24 from 3-point range.
- Regis’s Roberto Vercellino tallied three blocked shots and two steals over the weekend while adding nine points and six rebounds per game.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
- Conference action will take a break with the holiday season approaching as teams will now shift their attention to several non-conference matchups this coming week. The RMAC conference schedule will resume on Friday, January 4.
