COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado Mesa swept the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) weekly awards to open the 2019 swim and dive season.
 
TEAM HIGHLIGHTS
  • Colorado Mesa opened the season by hosting the 2-day Intermountain Shootout at the El Pomar Natatorium.
    • The Mavericks combined for 10 top-three and 45 top-five finishes throughout the evening against Division I competition, Air Force and BYU.
    • Individually, Torsten Rau won the 500-yard freestyle and Brittany Dixon claimed first in the 1-meter dive.
  • Colorado School of Mines and Adams State competed at the fourth annual Denver Relays to open their season.
    • The Orediggers’ men’s and women’s team finished in third place behind Denver and Wyoming while placing ahead of Adams State who got fourth overall.
  • Oklahoma Baptist hosted the Sam Freas Invitational where Oklahoma Christian and Nebraska-Kearney both competed.
    • The Oklahoma Baptist Bison collected 59 top-10 finishes between the men’s and women’s teams.
    • Oklahoma Christians’ Cheyenne Parks broke two records at the meet to go alongside numerous other top-5 finishes for the Eagles.
    • Nebraska-Kearney competed in the meet, marking their earliest regular season event. They collected 12 top-10 finishes.
  • Oklahoma Baptist University men’s and women’s teams both traveled to Midwest City, Oklahoma to compete against Rose State. Both the men and the women enjoyed a successful meet.
    • Combined, the men and women claimed first place in 13 of the 16 events.
    • The women placed first in every event with the exception of one while the men took home six event titles.
 
RMAC SWIMMERS AND DIVERS OF THE WEEK            
  • Torsten Rau of Colorado Mesa has earned RMAC Swimmer of the Week. He turned in three conference-leading times and three top-5 finishes, including an individual victory, CMU's lone swimming win, in the Intermountain Shootout against Division I Air Force and BYU over the weekend. He won the 500 free in 4:41.80 (4:36.80-altitude adjusted) and leads the RMAC in that as well as the 200 and 1650 free. In the 200, he took fourth overall in 1:42.49 (1:41.29-adjusted) while finishing third in the 1650 free at 16:37.20 (16:17.20).
  • Noah Macomber of Colorado Mesa has earned RMAC Diver of the Week. He was the top Division II finisher on both the 1 and 3-meter boards at the weekend Intermountain Shootout. On Friday, he scored 273.25 points on six dives off the 1-meter board to finish second overall amongst 11 divers. He finished higher than five Division I divers from Air Force and BYU. On Saturday, Macomber scored 269.60 points to finish third out of 12 divers on the 3-meter. He defeated four Division I opponents that day.
  • Davy Brown of Colorado Mesa has earned RMAC Swimmer of the Week. She had a strong start to her collegiate career recording a pair of top-3 finishes and four RMAC leading times against Division I foes Air Force and BYU in the Intermountain Shootout over the weekend. In the 400 IM, Brown finished second overall and defeated all Air Force swimmers with a time of 4:38.17 (4:33.17-altitude adjusted) to move into the No. 9 spot in CMU history. She also just missed the top 10 in CMU history for the 200 back, 100 back and 200 IM. In the 200 back, she finished third in 2:07.64 (2:06.44-altitude adjusted). She was fourth in the 200 IM at 2:10.58 (2:09.38-altitude adjusted), again beating all Air Force swimmers, and sixth in the 100 back at 58.41 (58.31-altitude adjusted). She leads the RMAC in both the 200 and 400 IMs as well as the 200 back and ranks second behind teammate Lauren White in the 100 back. Brown also turned in a RMAC-leading 50 back split of 27.35 in the 200 medley relay.
  • Brittany Dixon of Colorado Mesa has earned RMAC Diver of the Week. She won both diving events at the Intermountain Shootout against Division I Air Force and BYU while taking care of her NCAA qualifying in the first meet. She set an NCAA qualifying score of 255.90 points on six dives off the 1-meter board on Saturday to best the 15 diver field, which included ten NCAA Division I divers. On Friday, Dixon had won the 3-meter with 233.45 points on six dives, again besting 10 Division I divers in the 14-woman field.
 


 
INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS
  • In her first collegiate meet, the Sam Freas Invitational in Edmond, Okla., Cheyenne Parks of Oklahoma Christian finished first in a field of 29 swimmers in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:58.20. She later set a school record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.37, good for a second-place finish among 26 swimmers. Parks also anchored OC's fourth-place 200 freestyle relay team (that posted a time of 1:45.27) and swam the leadoff leg on the fifth-place 200 medley relay team (1:56.92).
  • Bergen Davis of Oklahoma Christian, last year's RMAC freshman of the year, starred for the Eagles in the Sam Freas Invitational in Edmond, Okla., prevailing in a field of 24 men in the 100 backstroke in 52.95 seconds. He also swam the leadoff (backstroke) leg on OC's winning 200 medley relay team, which posted a time of 1:35.92. He also finished 24th in the 50 freestyle (23.64 seconds) and eighth in the 100 butterfly (54.40 seconds).
  • Peyton Scherschel of Colorado School of Mines swam five events to lead Mines to a third-place finish (first among D-II competition) at the Denver Relays on Saturday. With some non-traditional events on the schedule, Scherschel guided the Orediggers to fourth in the 200-medley relay with a 25.84 breaststroke split, leading off the third-place 3x100 fly and breaststroke relays with respective splits of 51.45 and 57.22, leading off the fourth-place 4x25 relay in 19.32, and pacing the 4x25 medley relay to a fourth-place finish as the breaststroke leg. All five relays Scherschel was on were first among D-II competition.
  • Jevonn Cobin of Oklahoma Baprist won the 100m breast (1:15.19) and 200m IM (2:34.31) while also helping OBU win the 200m free relay in a time of 1:48.17.
  • Chase Kirby of Oklahoma Baptist won the 50m free (29.40) and 100m breast (1:23.26), and also helped OBU win the 200m free relay in a time of 2:01.25.
