COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – For the second straight year Colorado School of Mines Sports Information Department has been tabbed the J.W. Campbell/Con Marshall Sports Information Department of the Year award, announced on Tuesday.

The award is presented to the sports information department with the greatest impact during the most recent academic year. Each of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s (RMAC) 16 sports information departments provided their top three choices for the award and could not vote for themselves.

The award is named after two RMAC Hall of Fame sports information directors. J.W. Campbell was a long-time SID at Western Colorado University (WCU). He was also the assistant to the Western President, an assistant professor teaching seven separate disciplines and was the school’s information director. Campbell also co-authored two books and wrote numerous articles for magazines and trade publications. He passed away in March 2000 and was inducted into the RMAC Hall of Fame in July 2007.

Con Marshall spent 36 years as a Sports Information Director at Chadron State College (CSC). He was inducted into the RMAC Hall of Fame on July 2014. A native of Chadron, Nebraska and a CSC graduate, Marshall’s name was added to the award in 2007. He has received a 25-year award from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and served on the Harlon Hill Award Selection Committee. Marshall is currently the Information Services Officer for Chadron State, but still dedicates his time and resources to the sports information department whenever possible.

In this year’s vote, Dixie State University finished in second place, while Western Colorado finished third.

“Congratulations to the Orediggers for earning this amazing award for the second straight year,” said Matt Guiod, the RMAC Director of Strategic Communications. “In my first year at the conference office both Tim and Sam exemplified knowledge in the field that not only helped out their institution but myself as well. Their work on producing at-home production for four RMAC Network football games that aired on KWGN in Denver was top-notch.”

Colorado School of Mines’ outstanding success in athletics and academics has resulted in an eventful season for the Orediggers’ sports information department.

Athletic Director of Communications. “Communicators around the RMAC have risen to the challenge this year in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and now to act as a voice for social justice on behalf of their student-athletes, and it has been impressive to see each institution’s response. We want to thank our administration and coaches, outstanding student staff, table crews headed by Cliff Hendrick, and broadcast team including Miles Dunklin, Justin Adams, and Josh Tolle for the hard work they put in on behalf of our student-athletes. We are proud to share this with them.”
