COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) indoor track and field season picked back up agian this last week with two RMAC schools competing in national invites across the Rocky Mountain region.
Team Highlights
- Chadron State College competed at the Wayne State Wildcats Invitational Meet this last weekend and came away with four champions in individual events. On the field, the Eagles recorded victories in both the long and triple jumps that were good enough for NCAA provisional marks. CSC also won the men’s shot put. On the track, the Eagles had a first place finish in the 60-meter dash with second place finishes in both of the latter events.
- Colorado Chrisitan competed in a track and field event for the first time in a year when they traveled to Pittsburg State for the Crimson and Gold Invitational. The Cougars ended the meet first place finishes, personal and school bests and a NCAA Championship provisional time. The women performed excellent in the distance races, claiming the top spot in the 800m and 3000m. The men claimed a first place finish and NCAA provisional mark in the 3000m.
Track Athlete of the Week
WOMEN
- Colorado Christian’s Shannon King is the RMAC Female Track Athlete of the Week after her performance in her first collegiate meet, won the 800 meter race last week. Her time of 2:15.69 was over three seconds quicker than the runner-up. That is currently the second fastest time in the nation.
MEN
- Colorado Christian’s Josh Pierantoni Finished has been named the RMAC Men's Track Athlete of the Week because of his first place finish in the 3000 meter run from last week. He posted an NCAA provisional time of 8:16.48 as it is the fourth fastest time in the nation this season and best among RMAC schools.
Field Athlete of the Week
WOMEN
- Chadron State Sophomore Courtney Smith has been named the RMAC Field Athlete of the Week after placing fifth in the women's shot put and eighth in the weight throw, with marks of 12.12 and 15.14 meters, respectively. Both were season-bests and ranked her second in the RMAC.
MEN
- Chadron State’s Naishaun Jernigan has been named the RMAC Field Athlete of the Week following a NCAA provisional marks in both the long jump and triple jump on Saturday at the Wayne State College Wildcat Invite, winning both events. His long jump mark of 7.21 meters is a personal best and it won the event by nearly two feet. He went 14.73 meters in the triple jump to capture it by 3 feet, 8 inches. Jernigan jumped to sixth in NCAA Division II in both events.
Individual Highlights
WOMEN
- Chadron State Freshman Hannah Christie placed in two women's events. She was third in the high jump while clearing 1.58 meters (5-2 ¼) and fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:05.54. She now ranks third in the conference for high jump, and fourth in the 400.
MEN
- Chadron State’s Brodie Roden, won the 60-meter dash with a career-best time of 6.90 seconds. His time was .04 seconds away from a provisional NCAA mark and it currently ranks sixth in NCAA Division II.
