Brian Dawson, Laolu Oke Named RMAC Men’s Basketball Players of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Regis’ Brian Dawson and Metropolitan State University of Denver’s Laolu Oke are the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Men’s Basketball Players of the Week, the league announced Monday.
 
Dawson earns his first Offensive Player of the Week honor this season after leading the Rangers (5-1) to a trio of wins while averaging 20 points per game last week. After shooting above 40-percent in each contest, the Los Angeles, Calif., native closed out the week with a 53-percent field-goal average. He also shot 38 percent from three-point range and dished out 10 assists over the Rangers’ three-game stretch.
 
Oke locks up his third-consecutive Defensive Player of the Week honor of the season after leading the Roadrunners (6-0) to three wins last week. He tacked on three more double-double performances while averaging 19 points and 13.7 rebounds. Of Oke’s 41 rebounds throughout the week, 26 came off the defensive glass, allowing MSU Denver’s offense to find a groove. In addition to his defensive efforts, Oke shot 76 percent from the floor on the week and made seven of his nine free-throw attempts.
 
Offensive Player of the Week: Brian Dawson, Regis – Gr. – G – Los Angeles, Calif.
Dawson led the Rangers in scoring in each of their three games last week, averaging 20 points on 53-percent shooting. He opened up with 16 points and four assists in a 91-63 win over SAGU American Indian College on Tuesday and followed up with 26 points and two assists in an 83-64 win over Concordia-St. Paul on Friday. Dawson’s final performance of the week did not disappoint as he registered 18 points and three assists in a 96-71 victory over Benedictine Mesa Saturday afternoon. For the season, Dawson leads Regis’ scoring efforts with 14.5 points per game.
 
Defensive Player of the Week: Laolu Oke, MSU Denver – So. – F – Aurora, Colo.
Oke continued his dominant start to the season last week with three more double-double performances where he averaged 19 points, 13.7 rebounds and two assists to go along with a 75.8-percent field goal average. In MSU Denver’s game against Maine-Fort Kent, the sophomore dropped 22 points on an efficient 11-for-12 shooting to lead the Roadrunners to an 89-52 win on Tuesday. He then registered 17 points and 16 boards in a 71-68 win over Concordia-St. Paul Saturday. Oke then closed out the week with his 10th-straight double-double, 18 points and 12 rebounds, in an impressive 108-83 win over Benedictine Mesa on Sunday. Behind Oke’s efforts, MSU Denver is off to its best start since the 2012-13 season.
