Alex Andersson Named RMAC Men’s Soccer Player of the Year
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs’ Alex Andersson is the 2021 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Men’s Soccer Player of the Year, the league announced Wednesday. In addition to the men’s soccer individual award winners, the 2021 RMAC men’s all-conference teams were also revealed. Individual superlatives and all-conference teams are voted on by the league’s 11 head coaches. Coaches are not permitted to vote for their players.
Andersson claims RMAC Men’s Soccer Player of the Year after a stellar sophomore season for the Mountain Lions in which he led the league with 12 goals in just 10 appearances. He registered 26 points on the season with 24 points coming in RMAC play. Andersson was extremely efficient recording 1.89 shots on goal and 1.22 goals per game in conference play. The Helsingborg, Sweden, native’s latest honor marks the second RMAC individual accolade of his career, following his Freshman of the Year award last season.
The RMAC Freshman of the Year award will be split this season as a tie in voting between Colorado State University Pueblo’s Lamar Bynum and Fort Lewis’ Tomas Duenes results in Co-Freshman of the Year accolades for the pair. Bynum, a defender for the ThunderWolves, closed out the regular season with 18 starts and 1,492 minutes on the pitch. He was a key cog in a CSU Pueblo defense that has held opponents to 10 goals throughout the season. The ThunderWolves have limited foes to 7.6 shots and .56 goals per game in the 2021 campaign.
Duenes logged seven goals for the Skyhawks this season, a mark that ranks first on the Fort Lewis roster and fourth in the conference. He secured 17 starts and also added an assist to close out the season with 15 points. Duenes stamped a .425 shots-on-goal percentage, placing 17 of his 40 shots on target for the Skyhawks throughout the season
Ethan Anderson earns Defensive Player of the Year after pushing Colorado Mesa to a 14-3-1 overall record and an 8-1-1 mark in conference play. Anderson leads the Mavericks’ defense, which has allowed just 11 goals this season. A stout defense routinely sparked the attack for CMU as the Mavs outscored their opponents 47-11 throughout regular-season competition. Colorado Mesa’s defense limited teams to a .056 shooting percentage.
Colorado Mesa’s Connor Durant earns Goalkeeper of the Year after claiming eight shutouts for the Mavericks throughout the 2021 campaign, a mark that ranks fourth in the nation. Durant holds a stellar .530 goals-against average during his 1,527 minutes in the net for CMU. He started in all 17 of his appearances and has secured 57 saves to go along with a .864 save percentage.
Colorado School of Mines head coach Greg Mulholland is the RMAC Coach of the Year after steering the Orediggers to their fifth consecutive regular-season championship. Currently ranked No. 12 in the nation, the Orediggers closed out their conference slate with an unbeaten 9-0-1 conference record, earning the No. 1 seed at the upcoming RMAC Men’s Soccer Tournament. Mulholland has put together a potent attack as Colorado School of Mines stands eighth in the country for goals scored (46). Mines also ranks ninth in the nation for points (130) and 10th in NCAA Division II for assists (38).
Colorado School of Mines, CSU Pueblo and Regis lead the way with five all-conference selections apiece. Colorado Mesa claims four honorees, followed by while Fort Lewis and MSU Denver who each account for two selections.
