Mariah Martin, Sammy Van Sickle Named RMAC Women’s Basketball Players of the Week
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado Mesa’s Mariah Martin and Colorado School of Mines’ Sammy Van Sickle are the latest Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Players of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Martin paved the way for the Mavericks’ (10-1, 5-1 RMAC) unbeaten play last week, pushing her squad to a pair of wins over Adams State and Colorado State University Pueblo to claim her second Offensive Player of the Week award this season. Against the Grizzlies, the CMU guard dished out seven assists to go along with 33 points and six rebounds, leading the Mavs to a 79-69 victory. Of her 33 points against Adams State, 18 came from the charity stripe, where she was a perfect 18-for-18. The following day, Martin finished with 22 points, nine rebounds and two assists to lead her team to a 60-50 win at home over the No. 23-ranked ThunderWolves.
Van Sickle claims her third RMAC Defensive Player of the Week honor of the season after leading the Orediggers (10-1, 5-0 RMAC) to road wins over Western Colorado and Fort Lewis last week. She concluded the week with 11.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game to go along with a 47-percent field-goal average. Van Sickle claimed 12 of her 17 rebounds on the week from the defensive glass as Mines topped the Mountaineers 74-64 Friday before cruising past the Skyhawks 87-53 on Saturday.
Offensive Player of the Week: Mariah Martin, Colorado Mesa – Gr. – G – Sandy, Utah
Martin finished the week averaging 27.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists to lead the Mavs to a pair of conference victories last week. On Friday, Martin registered seven assists and a career-high 33 points against the Grizzlies after knocking down all 18 of her free-throw attempts, marking a CMU school record in the process. She then followed up with 22 points and a season-high nine rebounds on Saturday in the Mavs’ 10-point victory over the nationally-ranked ThunderWolves.
Defensive Player of the Week: Sammy Van Sickle, Colorado School of Mines – Sr. – F/G – Arvada, Colo.
Van Sickle nabbed another impressive week for the Orediggers, who went 2-0 to extend their unbeaten start to conference play. She began with 18 points, 13 rebounds, two steals and one block in Friday’s victory over the Mountaineers, marking her first double-double of the season. The senior shot 40-percent from the field while ripping three steals Saturday against the Skyhawks. Van Sickle currently stands 22nd nationally for steals this season (29).
