COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) announced the 2021 RMAC Softball All-Conference and Gold Glove teams on Wednesday.
A pair of maverick pitchers, and a roadrunner lead a talented pool that makes up the first and second team. Ellie Smith and Paige Adair represent Colorado Mesa as the Player and Pitcher of the Year, Shelby Robb of MSU Denver is the Freshman of the Year and Mercedes Bohte (Lovato) of Colorado Mesa is the Coach of the Year after being named the interim head coach early in the season.
The major award winners, along with the All-RMAC and Gold Glove teams, were voted on by the conferences' 12 head coaches. Coaches could not vote for their own student-athletes. Student-athletes who received one First Team vote, or Second Team votes, were named Honorable Mention.
The Gold Glove Team was selected for the first time in RMAC softball history. The team consists of one pitcher, one catcher, one first baseman, one second baseman, one third baseman, one shortstop and three outfielders. To qualify for selection, a student-athlete shall have played in a minimum of 75 percent of the contests at the position while pitchers were required to meet the standard of appearing in 50 percent of total contests this season.
Ellie Smith, the redshirt sophomore from CMU, is the RMAC Player of the Year and is also a NFCA Division II Pitcher/Player of the Year Finalist after putting up a remarkable season from inside the circle and behind the plate. Smith is the national leader in doubles while also holding the title as the top place holder in the RMAC in slugging percentage, RBIs, doubles and home runs. Pitching wise, Smith is second in earned run average and is the only undefeated pitcher in the RMAC.
Teammate, Paige Adair, is the RMAC Pitcher of the Year after winning Pitcher of the Week three times this season and she ended the regular season as the winningest pitcher in the conference (17 wins). Adair is third in the conference in opponents batting average (.237) and has struck out 101 batters this year, also third most in the RMAC.
MSU Denver’s Shelby Robb came onto the scene for the Roadrunners this season as the Freshman of the Year. Robb won the RMAC batting title, ending the regular season with a .535 batting average. She also has the third most hits and third best slugging percentage amongst all RMAC batters. Robb has been one of the most reliable hitters for MSU Denver to count on this season, as she has driven 41 RBIs with and has handed out six SAC flies (which is the most in the RMAC)
The Coach of the Year belongs to Mercedes Bohte of Colorado Mesa. Bohte took over as the interim head coach as the season was getting started and has led the Mavericks to the No. 15 ranked team in the country as well as a RMAC regular season title. CMU will host the RMAC Tournament for the fifth consecutive year as the top six among the six teams competing.
