COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) announced the 2021 RMAC Baseball All-Conference and Gold Glove teams on Tuesday.
Four mavericks shared in four of the five the major awards while there were ties in the talented freshmen pool of ball players who also headline this year’s All RMAC First and Second teams.
The major award winners, along with the All-RMAC and Gold Glove teams, were voted on by the conferences' 10 head coaches. Coaches could not vote for their own student-athletes.
The Gold Glove Team consists of one pitcher, one catcher, one first baseman, one second baseman, one third baseman, one shortstop and three outfielders. The nominees were nominated by their coach and based on the season’s best fielding percentage and applicable fielding statistics only. To qualify for selection, a student-athlete shall have played in a minimum of 75-percent of the contests at the position.
Haydn McGeary of Colorado Mesa is the RMAC Player of the Year after putting up one spectacular hitting season. McGeary leads the RMAC in most batting categories including hitting percentage (.500), slugging percentage (1.021), on base percentage (.554), hits (73), RBIs (74) and doubles (21).
On the bump, Andrew Morris of CMU is the Pitcher of the Year. The sophomore has the lowest earned run average amongst all qualifying RMAC pitchers with a 2.10 era this season.. He also leads the conference in strikeouts with 101 which is also tenth most in the nation. Morris is also the winningest pitcher in the RMAC this year as he holds an 8-0 record.
Two freshmen tied for Freshman Position Player of the Year: Mike Bathauer from Adams State and Matt Marlow of Regis. Bathauer has been one of the brightest stars on the Grizzlies roster in his first season. He has been named RMAC Player of the Week and leads ASU in batting percentage, hits, doubles, home runs, slugging percentage and RBIs. Matt Marlow leads the Rangers in most hitting categories including batting average, slugging percentage, OPS, hits, doubles, RBIs and on base percentage.
There was also a tie for Freshman Pitcher of the Year, MSU Denver’s Reichle Arcilise and CMU’s Kannon Handy. Arcilise appeared in 10 games this year for the Roadrunners and has a 3-1 record with a 2.67 era, striking out 33 batters and his opponents have a .198 hitting percentage. Handy has worked through the rotations this year for the Mavericks, accumulating a 4-0 record and has struck out 60 batters. He plays a piece in the Maverick pitching staff that is the best in the RMAC.
Finally, Chris Hanks is the RMAC Coach of the Year for the 12th time in his career since joining the Mavericks 23 years ago. Hanks was able to lead CMU to their 16th conference championship and the No. 1 spot in the national polls.
