Sammy Van Sickle, Alisha Davis Named RMAC Women’s Basketball Players of the Week
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado School of Mines’ Sammy Van Sickle and Colorado State University Pueblo’s Alisha Davis are the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Players of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Van Sickle claims her sixth weekly award of the season, this time earning Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Orediggers (13-1, 8-0 RMAC) to a 91-62 road win over South Dakota Mines on Saturday. The senior was lights out on offense, sinking all nine of her field-goal attempts against the Hardrockers and finishing the game with 24 points, four rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots. Of her nine successful field goals, six came from beyond the arc, as the Orediggers closed the game shooting 43-percent from three-point range.
Colorado School of Mines returns to the floor this week with a pair of home games. Up first for the Orediggers is a showdown against nationally-ranked Colorado Mesa on Friday, Jan. 21. Tipoff against the Mavericks is slated for 5:30 p.m. MT inside Lockridge Arena in Golden, Colo.
Davis secures her second Defensive Player of the Week honor of the season after leading the ThunderWolves (12-3, 8-1 RMAC) to a pair of conference wins on the road last week. In Friday’s contest at New Mexico Highlands, she tabbed 18 points, seven rebounds, four steals, three assists and two blocks as CSU Pueblo downed the Cowgirls 80-59. She then garnered a double-double against UCCS the following day, recording 16 points and 12 rebounds in a 53-34 win over the Mountain Lions.
This week marks a busy stretch for the ThunderWolves as CSU Pueblo will play four games over the next five days. Up first is a rescheduled game at home against MSU Denver Tuesday, Jan. 18. Tipoff against the Roadrunners is slated for 5 p.m. inside Massari Arena in Pueblo, Colo.
Offensive Player of the Week: Sammy Van Sickle, Colorado School of Mines – Sr. – F/G – Arvada, Colo.
Van Sickle became just the ninth player in RMAC history to record a perfect 6-for-6 outing from three-point range in a single game. The senior was perfect from the field and nailed all nine of her field-goal attempts against South Dakota Mines on Saturday. Her efforts delivered Colorado School of Mines its 10th-consecutive victory and gives the Orediggers sole possession of first place in the latest RMAC standings.
Defensive Player of the Week: Alisha Davis, CSU Pueblo – Jr. – F – Aurora, Colo.
In addition to her dominating presence on the offensive end of the floor, Davis capped a defensive clinic for the ThunderWolves last weekend, helping her team to two road victories. Against NMHU, the junior accounted for two blocks and four steals to go along with her seven rebounds. In Saturday’s outing against UCCS, Davis showed her versatility and pulled down 12 rebounds to go along with 18 points and four blocks for her second double-double of the season.
