Melissa Moreni, Kyla Sawvell Named Women’s Indoor Athletes of the Week
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs’ Melissa Moreni and Black Hills State’s Kyla Sawvell are the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women’s Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, the league announced Wednesday.
Moreni earns the latest RMAC track honor after a dominant performance over the weekend at the Potts Invitational, hosted by the University of Colorado. The redshirt freshman crossed the finish line for first place in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.78, marking her third-fastest showing of the season. The mark stands as a NCAA DII provisional time and bested a field of 11 competitors in the event.
UCCS returns home for the weekend to host the Colorado Running Company UCCS Invite. The two-day meet is slated to begin Saturday, Jan. 22, inside Mountain Lion Fieldhouse.
Sawvell earns RMAC Field Athlete of the Week distinctions after claiming a pair of first-place finishes in the weight throw and shot put events for the Yellow Jackets at the Myrle Hanson Open in Spearfish, S.D. The junior set her second provisional mark of the season in the weight throw after launching an attempt of 18.76 meters (61-06.75 ft). She also captured a top mark in the shot put with a 14.35m (47-01.0 ft) heave. She currently ranks among the nation’s best in each event and stands No. 8 in the weight throw and No. 10 in the shot put.
Black Hills State is back in competition this weekend with more hosting duties at the Dave Little Alumni Mile. The two-day meet will be hosted inside Donald E. Young Center Fieldhouse, beginning Friday, Jan. 21.

Moreni took home a gold medal for the Mountain Lions in the 60m hurdles last weekend at the Potts Invitational in Boulder, Colo. The redshirt freshman led the way with a converted time of 8.78 seconds for her third-fastest performance of the season. On the way to her first-place finish, the Helena, Mont., native dusted 10 NCAA Division I competitors.
Women’s Field Athlete of the Week: Kyla Sawvell, Black Hills State – Jr. – Wall, S.D.
Sawvell bested the provisional mark that she set in the weight throw earlier this season with yet another first-place finish over the weekend at the Yellow Jacket Holiday Open, where she launched a mark of 18.76m. Additionally, she took home a second gold medal in the shot put event with a toss of 14.35m to lead a field of 11 competitors.
