LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- New Mexico Highlands Athletics announced Thursday it has promoted associate head coach
Ron Hudson to head coach of the Cowboys' football program.
Hudson just completed his first season with NMHU this past season, helping the Cowboys to a 5-6 record as the associate head coach, special teams coordinator and tight ends coach. The five wins is most for NMHU since 2012 and it included a first win over CSU Pueblo since 2003 and a first victory over Western New Mexico since 2015 to bring the Warrior's Helmet back to Las Vegas.
"We're thrilled to announce
Ron Hudson as our new head coach," NMHU Director of Athletics
Andrew Ehling said. "Coach Hudson was a big part of our turnaround this past season. His nearly three decades of coaching experience at all levels is tough to match and we're looking forward to seeing where he takes the program from here."
Prior to NMHU, Hudson was the offensive line coach at Georgia Southern from 2018-20 - coaching a pair of All-Sun Belt players. Prior to that, Hudson worked at Charleston Southern (2017-18) in the same position before being an offensive analyst at Penn State from 2016-17. Hudson also coached at Nevada, Massachusetts, New Mexico, Louisiana-Lafayette, Texas A&M-Kingsville and several other schools during his career.
"It's an honor to be the next head football coach at New Mexico Highlands University," Hudson said. "I would like to thank President Dr. Sam Minner and athletic director
Andrew Ehling for allowing me to achieve my lifelong goal. These two men share a great vision for the future of NMHU football. I look forward to building a program that the University, community and state of New Mexico can be proud of for years to come."
At Louisiana-Lafayette from 2005-11 (he was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2008), Hudson guided the program to being ranked in the top 15 in Division IĀ four times and three times ranked in the top 15 in fewest sacks allowed. The team was also bowl eligible in four of his six seasons there.
This will be Hudson's first job as a collegiate head coach.
Hudson is a graduate of Muskingum College and earnedĀ his master's at Louisville.
