Colorado School of Mines Men, Adams State Women Claim 2022 RMAC Cross Country Team Titles

DURANGO, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines men and Adams State’s women dominated the field to earn first-place team finishes Saturday at the 2022 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships at Hill Crest Golf Course in Durango, Colo. Mines’ Dillon Powell captured the league’s Men’s Runner of the Year award following his individual title, while ASU’s Stephanie Cotter secured the women’s individual championship to earn the RMAC Women’s Runner of the Year honor.
 
The Orediggers’ Paul Knight and the Grizzlies’ Maggie McCleskey were named the Men’s and Women’s Freshman of the Year, respectively, as the top freshmen in their races. Colorado School of Mines head coach Chris Siemers and Adams State head coach Damon Martin were named the Men’s and Women’s Coaches of the Year, respectively, after leading their teams to conference titles.
 
Powell opened the day with a blazing time in the men’s 8,000-meter event where he crossed the finish line at 24:05.6. He led a string of five Colorado School of Mines finishers among the top 10 and did so with an average mile time of 4:50.9. Chris Cathcart and Duncan Fuehne joined Powell as top-five finishers, while freshman Paul Knight locked up his Freshman of the Year accolade with an eighth-place finish (25:00.7).
 
The No. 1 ranked Orediggers closed Saturday’s men’s event with a score of 26, defeating the second-place team, Adams State, by a 20-point margin. The Grizzlies took second place in the men’s standings with 46 points, while Western Colorado locked up third place with 91 points. University of Colorado Colorado Springs claimed fourth place with a team score of 110 points, followed by Colorado Mesa’s 150 points to round out the top five.
 
Cotter and the No. 1 nationally ranked Grizzlies were nearly perfect on the day and claimed an incredible 17 points to nab the women’s conference title and finish just two points shy of a perfect score. Cotter claimed a first-place individual finish after crossing the finish line at 20:45.8 in the women’s 6,000-meter event. Adams State earned the top-four finishing positions as Brianna Robles, Precious Robinson and Emily Schoellkopf stamped second, third and fourth-place finishes, respectively. Layla Almasri earned five points for the UCCS women as the fifth-place finisher.
 
While Adams State earned the women’s conference championship, Colorado School of Mines took second in the team standings with 76 points. UCCS finished third overall with 88 points, followed by Western Colorado (109) and CSU Pueblo (113) to round out the top-five spots.
 
Up next is the 2022 NCAA South Central Men’s and Women’s Regional Championships, which will be in conjunction on Saturday, Nov. 19, at Washington Park in Denver, Colo. Start times have yet to be announced.
