Mountain Lions Take Men’s and Women’s Titles at RMAC Indoor Championships
GUNNISON, Colo. – For the third consecutive year, University of Colorado Colorado Springs captures the men’s and women’s team titles at the 2021-22 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. The conference championships closed Saturday after two grueling days of competition inside Mountaineer Field House in Gunnison, Colo. The Mountain Lions topped the men’s standings with 168.5 points, while the UCCS women’s team earned its championship with 179.5 points. A total of 21 events were finalized throughout the final day of the meet.
Colorado Mesa took second place with 101 points in the men’s standings, while Adams State clinched the third-place position with 75 points. Colorado State University Pueblo captured fourth place after securing 71 points, followed by Colorado School of Mines with 68 points. Western Colorado finished in sixth place with 52 points, while Chadron State grabbed 52 points to close the weekend in seventh place and MSU Denver and South Dakota tied for eighth place with 19 points each. Colorado Christian (15 points), Black Hills State (11 points) and Westminster (4 points) rounded out the standings.
While UCCS finished at the top of the women’s standings, Colorado Mesa closed the meet in second place with 91 points, while Colorado School of Mines rounded out the top three with 76 points. Western Colorado claimed 69.5 points for fourth place and was followed by a fifth-place Adams State program, which earned 65 points. CSU Pueblo closed the competition in sixth place with 53.5 points, while Black Hills State finished in seventh place with 40 points. Westminster registered 29 points for eighth place, followed by MSU Denver (19 points), Chadron State (14.5 points), New Mexico Highlands (14 points), South Dakota Mines (7 points) and Colorado Christian (5 points).
Colorado Mesa’s Elijah Williams was named the RMAC Men’s Athlete of the Meet after scoring 21.25 points for the Mavericks. Williams’ strong performance at the RMAC championships was highlighted by a pair of gold-medal performances in the men’s 60-meter and 200m events.
Black Hills State’s Kyla Sawvell and UCCS’ Kayla Zink split the RMAC Women’s Athlete of the Meet award after accounting for 20 points apiece for their respective teams. After claiming gold in the women’s weight throw on day one, she matched the performance on day two with another gold medal in the shot put event. Zink also earned a pair of gold medals for herself on the final day of the meet, taking first place in the women’s 60m dash and the 200m races.
