Day One of RMAC Swimming and Diving Championships Concludes

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After a morning of preliminary competition, followed by finals events Wednesday evening, day-one action has concluded at the 2021-22 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships. Colorado Mesa leads the men’s standings with 323.5 points in addition to the women’s standings with 387.5 points.
 
A total of five women’s events have been finalized, while four events have wrapped in men’s competition. In the women’s standings, the Mavericks lead the way but are followed by Colorado School of Mines in second place with 207.5 points and Oklahoma Christian with 162 points. Western Colorado sits in fourth place with 132 points, while Nebraska-Kearney holds the fifth-place spot with 85 points. Colorado State University Pueblo resides in sixth place with 63 points and Adams State rounds out the women’s rankings with 26 points.
 
The Mavs stand first overall in the men’s rankings and are followed by Colorado School of Mines in second place with 224.5 points. Oklahoma Christian stands in third place with 196 points, while Adams State holds fourth place with 51 points.
 
To open Wednesday’s finals competition, Colorado Mesa’s Amelia Kinnard took first place in the women’s 1,000-yard freestyle event, touching the wall with a time of 10:15.93. Colorado School of Mines’ Meghan Slowey clinched second place with a 10:19.92, followed by CMU’s Robyn Naze, who secured bronze with 10:34.68.
 
In the men’s 1,000-yard freestyle, Oklahoma Christian’s Victor Rosado led the way with a 12-second victory over the field after closing the event at 9:14.82. Gavin Anderson claimed second place with a time of 9:26.4, while Oklahoma Christian freshman Chase Fields rounded out the top-three spots after posting a 9:31.23.
 
Lily Borgenheimer and Davy Brown earned first and second-place finishes, respectively, in the women’s 200-yard individual medley race. Borgenheimer earned a time of 2:00.4, while Brown secured a time of 2:02.37. Oklahoma Christian’s Cheyenne Parks took third in the medley event after touching the wall at 2:06.06.
 
JT Amrein took gold in the men’s 200 individual medley event after improving upon his preliminary time with a 1:48.15 in the finals portion. Colorado Mesa claimed the second and third-place spots with a 1:49.89 from Matt Barrett and a 1:50.01 from Ben Sampson.
 
Colorado Mesa’s Julie Day took home the top spot in the women’s 50-yard freestyle race (23.68), while Lane Austin secured the top spot in the men’s portion of the event (20.22).
 
In the lone diving event of the day, the Mavericks earned the top-three spots, led by Jolynn Harris and followed by Ali Lange and Kyra Apodaca in second and third place, respectively. Harris found the top of the podium with 456.35 points, while Lange claimed 417.9 points and Apodaca’s 391.9 points.
 
Lauren White, Borgenheimer, Brown and Day teamed up in the women’s 200-yard relay to grab the gold medal for the Mavericks. Sampson, Mahmoud Elgayar, Dejan Urbanek and Austin earned the event sweep by claiming first place in the men’s 200-yard relay for the Mavs.
 
Day two of the RMAC Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships begins with more preliminary events Thursday, Feb. 10, inside CMU’s El Pomar Natatorium. Thursday’s action opens with the women’s 100-yard butterfly event.
