Mavs’ Steinke, Eickelman Earn RMAC Men’s Lacrosse Weekly Honors

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado Mesa’s James Steinke and Drew Eickelman are the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Men’s Lacrosse Players of the Week, the league announced Monday.
 
Steinke earns his second Offensive Player of the Week honor this season after pacing the Mavericks’ (5-2, 2-0 RMAC) offense with five goals and four assists to split last week with a 1-1 record. Two of the Castle Rock, Colo., native’s goals were unassisted as he finished the week with a .778 shots-on-goal percentage. He secured the first hat trick of his collegiate career in a 14-10 win over Palm Beach Atlantic on Wednesday and followed that performance with two goals and three assists Saturday in a narrow loss to No. 2 Tampa.
 
Eickelman claims Defensive Player of the Week distinctions after earning seven ground balls and three caused turnovers for the Mavericks last week. The redshirt sophomore also landed three of his four shots on target as the Mavs nearly claimed a win over No. 2 Tampa.
 
Colorado Mesa continues its’ run in the Sunshine State this week with a pair of games. Up first for the Mavericks is a showdown against No. 13 Florida Tech, Wednesday, March 23, at 2 p.m. MT. The game against the Panthers will be hosted on Panther Field in Melbourne, Fla.
 
Offensive Player of the Week: James Steinke, Colorado Mesa – R-So. – MF – Castle Rock, Colo.
Steinke scored five goals while assisting on four others as he tallied nine offensive points in the Mavs’ first two games of their Florida run last week. He recorded his first career hat trick with three goals and an assist in Wednesday’s 14-10 win at Palm Beach Atlantic before leading the Mavericks with five points on two goals and three assists Saturday against No. 2 Tampa. Seven of his nine shots on the week were placed on frame and he also racked up five ground balls. Steinke leads the RMAC this season with 22 offensive points, is tied for second in the conference with 11 assists and stands third in the league with 11 goals.
 
Defensive Player of the Week: Drew Eickelman, Colorado Mesa – R-So. – MF – Littleton, Colo.
Eickelman set new season-high performances for ground balls (4) and caused turnovers (3) last week as he led the Mavericks defensively in Wednesday’s 14-10 win at Palm Beach Atlantic. He also scored a goal in that contest before coming back to scoop up three more ground balls in Saturday’s game at No. 2 Tampa. For the week, Eickelman finished with seven ground balls.
