Sharman-Newell, Abbott Named RMAC Men’s Track and Field Athletes of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo’s Reece Sharman-Newell and University of Colorado Colorado Springs’ Dakota Abbott are the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, the league announced Wednesday.
 
Sharman-Newell capped a pair of stellar finishes for the ThunderWolves over the weekend at the CSU Pueblo Spank Blasing Open. The true freshman claims RMAC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week after a second-place finish in the 800-meter run, crossing the finish line with a 1:47.16 for a NCAA provisional time. He then ran the second leg of the ThunderWolves’ 4x400m relay team, which finished second with a 3:12.87 behind a division one team.
 
CSU Pueblo is back on the track this weekend at the Maverick Classic, hosted by Colorado Mesa. The event will begin Friday, April 1, and will conclude Saturday, April 2. Both days of the meet will be hosted at the CMU Track and Field Complex in Grand Junction, Colo.
 
Abbott earns RMAC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week distinctions after a dominant performance in the triple jump for the Mountain Lions over the weekend at the CSU Pueblo Spank Blasing Open. He took top honors in the triple jump with a 15.65m (51’4.25”) leap on his final attempt. Abbott’s triple jump performance stands as a NCAA provisional mark and is his second-best jump of the season. In addition to the triple jump, he also took seventh-place honors in the long jump with a 7.18m (23’6.75”) mark.
 
UCCS will also be in action this weekend at the Maverick Classic in Grand Junction, Colo. The Mountain Lions will take part in the two-day event, beginning Friday.
 
Men’s Track Athlete of the Week: Reece Sharman-Newell, CSU Pueblo – Fr. – Hampshire, UK
Sharman-Newell had a stellar performance at the CSU Pueblo Spank Blasing Open over the weekend, finishing in second place in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:47.16. The time places him first on the NCAA provisional qualifying list this season and is the second-fastest 800m time in program history. The true freshman was also part of the ThunderWolves’ 4x400m relay team, which placed second with a time of 3:12.87, behind Colorado State, which stands as the fifth-fastest time in NCAA DII this season.
 
Men’s Field Athlete of the Week: Dakota Abbott, UCCS – R-Jr. – Amherst, Neb.
Abbott won the triple jump at the Spank Blasing Open last weekend with a monster leap of 15.65m. He currently owns NCAA Division II’s best triple jump mark of the season and stands exactly 1.01m ahead of the next closest RMAC competitor. The redshirt junior also competed in the long jump on Saturday, finishing seventh in the field of 24 competitors with a mark of 7.18m.
