PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado Mesa’s Justin Thompson and Colorado School of Mines’ Zoe Baker are the 2022 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Summit Award winners, the league announced Friday.

Thompson sweeps his second RMAC Men’s Track and Field Summit Award of the year as a redshirt sophomore exercise science major. He currently holds a perfect 4.0 grade-point average and has done so while earning a spot among the nation’s top-10 long jumpers. Thompson currently ranks 10th in the NCAA Division II in the long jump with his 7.43-meter (24’4.5”) provisional mark, which he accomplished at home in the Maverick Invite #2 (April 15). The Carbondale, Colo., native has proven a versatile athlete for the Mavs this outdoor season by also competing in the 100m and triple jump events. Additionally, he is coming off an indoor campaign where he was named the NCAA Division II Men’s Elite 90 Award winner in addition to winning the RMAC Men’s Indoor Summit Award.

Baker also sweeps the RMAC Women’s Track and Field Summit Awards and does so as a double major in computer science and applied mathematics. The redshirt junior, who holds a perfect 4.0 GPA, was also named the RMAC Summit Award winner and the NCAA DII Women’s Elite 90 Award winner for the indoor season. She currently ranks 15th in the nation in the 5,000m race with her 16:27.83 performance at the Mt. SAC Relays (April 13) earlier this season. Additionally, Baker stands sixth nationally in the 10,000m after throwing down a 33:52.75 at the Stanford Invitational (April 1). She has been efficient with her performances this season, earning top times in just three regular-season meets.

The RMAC Summit Awards are presented to student-athletes with the highest cumulative GPA that are also competing at the site of the finals for their sport’s championship. All GPAs are based on a straight-grading scale to ensure consistency among nominees. All ties are broken by the total number of credit hours completed through the most recently concluded semester.

To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must be a sophomore or above, who have participated in their sport at their institution for at least two years. Student-athletes must be active members of their teams, traveling and competing at the RMAC championship event. Graduate students are not eligible to win the award.

Thompson and Baker will be honored during the awards ceremony on Sunday, May 1, upon the conclusion of the RMAC outdoor championships. The 2022 RMAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships are underway at the CSU Pueblo ThunderBowl in Pueblo, Colo.
