Mavericks’ Ada Qunell and Kyra Apodaca Named RMAC Women’s Swimmer and Diver of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado Mesa’s Ada Qunell and Kyra Apodaca are the week eight Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women’s Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, the league announced Wednesday.
 
Qunell earns her first RMAC Swimmer of the Week honor for the season after a solid performance during the Mavericks’ dual with the University of Utah. The freshman registered a personal best in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.50 seconds. Qunell recorded a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:56.33. She also helped push the Mavs’ 400-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay teams to a third-place finish.
 
For the fourth time this season, Apodaca claims the RMAC Diver of the Week honor in a road dual with the Utes. The sophomore set a career-best with a score of 248.75 for a third-place finish in the three-meter competition. In the one-meter competition, Apodaca took the fourth-place spot with a total score of 234.45.
 
The Mavericks will travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., for a duel with the Air Force Academy on Friday, January 20. The duel will begin inside Cadet Natatorium at 5 p.m. MT.
 
Women’s Swimmer of the Week: Ada Qunell, Colorado Mesa – Fr. – Whitefish, Mont.
Qunell turned in a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:56.33. She was the first Maverick to finish the race leading a pack of six Mavericks inside the top 10. The Whitefish, Mont., native finished four seconds off the first-place finisher. The freshman also swam a personal-best 58.50 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly for a fourth-place finish.
 
Women’s Swimmer of the Week: Kyra Apodaca, Colorado Mesa – So. – Sugar Land, Texas
Apodaca set a career-best six-dive score of 248.75 for a third-place finish in the three-meter event. The sophomore led a group of five Mavericks within the top eight of the three-meter event. In the one-meter event, she claimed a fourth-place finish with a score of 234.45.
