COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado School of Mines’ Joe Peak and Colorado Mesa’s Isaiah Cheeks are the Week Seven Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Men’s Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, the league announced Wednesday.
Peak secures his first RMAC Swimmer of the Week honor of the season after an impressive outing for the Orediggers in last weekend’s dual against University of Wyoming. The redshirt senior competed in five races for Mines and closed the weekend with four podium finishes. Peak nabbed silver medals in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.33) and the 200-yard freestyle relay event. He also earned bronze medals in the 400-yard medley relay (3:28.34) and 200-yard butterfly (1:56.79) events.
The Orediggers have closed the book on the 2022-23 regular season and will now turn their attention to the 2023 RMAC Swimming and Diving Championships, which are slated to begin on Tuesday, Feb. 7, inside El Pomar Natatorium in Grand Junction, Colo. Cheeks closes out the regular season as a six-time RMAC Men’s Diver of the Week following his latest performance for the Mavericks. The redshirt junior led the Mavs’ diving contingent once again, this time with a pair of fourth-place finishes on the one-meter and three-meter boards at the Air Force Winter Invite. No stranger to provisional marks, the Aurora, Colo., native notched NCAA efforts once again with a score of 300.60 points in the three-meter dive and 277.15 points in the one-meter event.
The Mavericks’ diving squad will compete in one final regular-season event, the Air Force Diving Event, a three-day event beginning on Thursday, Feb. 3, in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Men's Swimmer of the Week: Joe Peak, Colorado School of Mines – R-Sr. – Roswell, Ga.
Joe Peak was an iron man for Mines swimming on his senior day against NCAA Division I Wyoming. Peak appeared in five races and helped score 13 points for his team. He claimed second-place points in the 200-yard free with a time of 1:47.33 and also helped with second-place points in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:28.49). Peak added third-place finishes in the 400-yard medley relay (3:28.34) and the 200-yard butterfly (1:56.79). He also threw down an exhibition outing in the 50-yard freestyle as well, touching the wall in 22.72.
Men's Diver of the Week: Isaiah Cheeks, Colorado Mesa – R-Jr. – Aurora, Colo.
Cheeks again led the Maverick divers, placing fourth on both the 1m and 3m boards in Friday's portion of the Air Force Winter Invite, which featured opposition from three NCAA Division I schools. Already assured of NCAA qualification, Cheeks set another qualifying score of 300.60 points on the 3m and turned in a score of 277.15 points on the 1m. He defeated a combined 11 Division I divers across his two events.
