Mavericks Tabbed First in Inaugural RMAC Women’s Wrestling Preseason Coaches’ Poll
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado Mesa enters the inaugural 2023-24 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women’s Wrestling season as the favorites after earning 14 points and three first-place votes in the RMAC Women’s Wrestling Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The RMAC Women’s Wrestling Preseason Coaches’ Poll is voted on by the league’s five head coaches. Coaches are not permitted to vote for their own program.
The Mavericks enter the 2023-24 season after a strong showing at last year’s National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships (NCWWC) at PowerHouse Arena in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in which they nabbed a fourth-place team finish with 108 points. Colorado Mesa boasts a deep roster of 35 student-athletes, 11 of which are upperclassmen. With no seniors on the roster, The Mavs will aim to continue last year’s success behind head coach Travis Mercado and assistant coach Marissa Gallegos, who earned the program’s first individual national championship last season.
Entering its second season of competition, Texas Woman’s ranks second overall with 10 points in RMAC preseason voting. The Pioneers sent five competitors to the 2023 NCWWC event and have reloaded with a roster that contains 22 student-athletes. TWU will compete in eight regular-season events this season, leading up to the inaugural RMAC Women’s Wrestling Championship. Additionally, the Pioneers are slated to host the NCWWC regional event beginning on Saturday, Feb. 24, and concluding on Sunday, Feb. 25.
Rounding out the top three spots in RMAC preseason voting are Adams State and Simon Fraser, which tied for third place with nine points and one first-place vote each. Simon Fraser completes the league’s inaugural preseason poll with eight points.
All roads lead to the 2024 RMAC Women’s Wrestling Championship, which is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 3, at a site that will be announced at a later date.
