Regis Defeats MSU Denver to Claim 2023 RMAC Volleyball Championship
DENVER, Colo – In a thrilling five-set match, the No. 3 seed Regis University Rangers defeated the No. 1 seed Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners to claim the 2023 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Volleyball Championship. Regis’ setter, Mara LeGrand, was named the 2023 RMAC Volleyball Tournament Most Valuable Player with an impressive 112 assists over three matches.
From the jump, the championship match was a back-and-forth affair as an immovable object met an unstoppable force. The Roadrunners came out swinging and took a 1-0 set lead over the Rangers with a score of 25-21. Regis then recovered and evened the match at 1-1 with a 20-25 set win before MSU Denver claimed the third set with a score of 25-19. With their backs against the wall, the Rangers grabbed sets four and five with scores of 20-25 and 11-15, respectively.
While LeGrand claimed MVP honors, she was not alone in the Rangers path to victory against the Roadrunners. Middle blocker Amelia Davis filled the stat sheet for the Rangers with 20 kills on .410 hitting and four block assists, while Nadine Burbrink was dominant with an impressive 15 kills and six block assists, and Haley Kennedy tallied 20 digs.
Much like Regis, the Roadrunners never backed down when the going got tough. In a return to action, Rylee Hladky led an MSU Denver offense with 18 kills on .273 hitting. Teammates Riley Anderson and Skyler Michael recorded 14 and 11 kills, respectively, earning spots on the RMAC All-Tournament Team. Freshman Autumn Gibbs was unstoppable from the serve as she nabbed a game-high six service aces.
The 2023 RMAC Volleyball Tournament MVP, Mara LeGrand, was setting up teammates all night, as the graduate student recorded 53 assists, 11 digs and six points on the night. Fellow Rangers Klaudia Sowizral, Nadine Burbrink and Amelia Davis joined LeGrand on the All-Tournament roster, as South Dakota Mines’ Allesandra Meoni and Colorado Mesa’s Sydney Leffler round out the roster.
Following the win, the Rangers secured an automatic qualification to the NCAA Tournament, which begins November 30. The Roadrunners will be eagerly waiting to hear their name called in the NCAA Division II Selection Show.
