Griffins, Mavericks, Orediggers and Rangers Advance in 2023 RMAC Women’s Soccer Tournament
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Two-seeded Colorado School of Mines, No. 3 seed Regis, fourth-seeded Colorado Mesa and No. 8 seed Westminster won their quarterfinal matches to move on in the 2023 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament.
The Orediggers locked down a 3-0 victory over Fort Lewis, Regis grabbed a 3-1 overtime win over Colorado State University Pueblo, the Mavericks held off Metropolitan State University Denver 3-2, while Westminster provided the biggest and only upset of the tournament, knocking off top-seeded University of Colorado Colorado Springs 1-0 on the road in double overtime.
#8 Westminster 1, #1 UCCS 0 (2OT)
In the tightest game of the quarterfinal round, the Griffins gave the outright regular season champions all they could handle. Both squads played a physical match in Colorado Springs, with 90 minutes not being enough. The game remained scoreless until the 101st minute when senior midfielder Emma Geiges took a free kick and smashed it into the net for the deciding goal for Westminster. The Mountain Lions were awarded a penalty kick five minutes later to potentially knot the game up, but senior goalkeeper Mashaun Estridge came up with a massive safe to keep the lead for the Griffins and hang on for the big upset.
#2 Colorado School of Mines 3, #7 Fort Lewis 0
The Orediggers rode the leg of RMAC Freshman of the Year Bella Campos, as her hat-trick provided the only scoring in the match. Coming in as the reigning tournament champions, Colorado School of Mines prevailed at home for their fifth straight victory at Stermole Soccer Stadium. The Orediggers continued their impressive defensive efforts with another shutout victory, their ninth consecutive clean sheet and have not conceded a goal since October 1.
#3 Regis 3, #6 CSU Pueblo 1 (OT)
Things looked bleak in Denver for the Rangers, until they didn’t. Regis came from behind to take down the ThunderWolves despite trailing for over 60 minutes. The Pack made an opening statement, started the scoring with junior Carlia Johnson’s third goal this season and held onto that lead for most of the match. Senior Kelby Kuo delivered the tying strike for the Rangers to send the match into overtime.
Four minutes into the overtime period, Regis secured the game-winner, as graduate midfielder Alexis Gaffney headed in a corner kick for her first goal of the season. The Rangers created some distance just five minutes later, putting the game away with sophomore Natalie Bunch’s 11th goal of the year.
#4 Colorado Mesa 3, #5 MSU Denver 2
In Grand Junction, the Mavericks controlled their quarterfinal matchup from start to finish. CMU jumped out to an early lead in the first half, as redshirt junior Sauvelyne Randel and junior Adessa Correa each scored to give them a two-goal lead. Randel contributed to the third Mavs goal, giving Kylie Wells her sixth goal this season and a commanding 3-0 lead. The Roadrunners did not go down without a fight, scoring twice, but ultimately could not come up with the all-important third goal.
The stage is set for Wednesday, Nov. 8 as the 2023 RMAC Women’s Soccer Semifinal Round gets underway. Two-seed Colorado School of Mines will host No. 3 Regis in a Denver-area clash, while the four-seed Colorado Mesa gets a home match against the upset-minded No. 8 Westminster.
