COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado School of Mines’ Duncan Fuehne and Margaux Basart are the 2023 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Academic Runners of the Year, respectively, the league announced Wednesday. In addition to Fuehne and Basart’s individual honors, the league also announced the 2023 Men’s and Women’s Cross Country First Team Academic All-Conference and honor roll rosters. The RMAC Academic All-Conference teams are voted on by the league’s 15 sports information directors.
Fuehne is the RMAC Men’s Cross Country Academic Runner of the Year after an outstanding year in which he placed third in the 2023 RMAC Cross Country Championships and 11th in the 2023 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships. His performance at the RMAC Championships secured the Orediggers a first-place team finish and Fuehne a first team all-conference spot. When he is not racing, Fuehne is a dedicated student who is majoring in Applied Physics and has secured himself a 3.98 grade point average (GPA).
Basart takes home RMAC Women’s Cross Country Academic Runner of the Year honors after an impressive season and a 4.0 GPA. The Engineering Physics major led the Oredigger women’s team to three consecutive top-five finishes in the 2023 RMAC Cross Country Championship, NCAA Division II South Central Region Championship and NCAA Division II Cross Country Championship. These finishes earned the Colorado School of Mines women’s team to a Division II national ranking of No. 3 to end the 2023 season.
Kyle Shirley (Chadron State), Klay Grant (Colorado Christian), Chase Brown (Colorado Mesa) and Mart Nijuis (New Mexico Highlands) carry the only 4.0 GPAs on the men’s side, as General Business, English, Mechanical Engineering Technology and Chemistry majors, respectively.
Joining Basart on the 4.0 list is Metropolitan State University of Denver’s Heidi Yagen and University of Colorado Colorado Springs’ Nadine Almasri. Yagen and Almasri major in Aviation & Aerospace Science and Health Care Science, respectively.
Of the 14 honorees on the men’s and women’s first teams, seven RMAC institutions are represented on each team.
