Noah Hermosillo Repeats as RMAC Wrestler of the Year
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – For the second consecutive season, Adams State’s Noah Hermosillo is the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Year, the league announced Wednesday. Hermosillo also earns a spot on the RMAC All-Conference First Team at the 157-pound class and headlines a list of all-conference selections that were announced alongside the league’s individual honors. RMAC All-Conference and individual honors are nominated and voted on by the league’s eight head coaches. Coaches are not permitted to vote for themselves or their own student-athletes.
Hermosillo claims his second consecutive RMAC Wrestler of the Year honor after leading his team to the 2023 NCAA Division II Super Regional VI title with a first-place finish in the 157-pound weight class. The Gypsum, Colo., native holds a flawless 20-0 record on the season and is ranked No. 1 in the nation at 157 pounds. He cashed in 19 points at the NCAA DII Super Region VI Championship after closing out four victories, including two major decisions and a fall. Hermosillo will now advance to the NCAA DII National Championship where he is the No. 1 seed in his class. He will need just four victories to repeat as a national champion after doing so in the 149-pound weight class last season.
Chadron State’s Keegan Gehlhausen is the RMAC Freshman of the Year after compiling a 15-10 individual record ahead of the NCAA DII Wrestling Championships. Gehlhausen continues to play an integral role for the Eagles throughout the 2022-23 campaign after closing the RMAC regular season with a 4-3 individual record. In his first year of collegiate competition, he claimed a pair of decision victories at the NCAA DII Super Region VI Championship before falling in the title match.
In his first season at the helm, Colorado Mesa head coach Mike Mendoza is the RMAC Coach of the Year after leading the Mavericks to their third consecutive regular-season title after closing the RMAC schedule with a perfect 7-0 record. Colorado Mesa then took third as a team at the NCAA Super Region VI Championship after placing seven competitors among the top-five finishers of their respective weight classes, two of which earned runner-up performances. Additionally, the Mavs qualified four competitors for the NCAA DII Wrestling Championships, including 8-seed Dawson Collins (125 lbs), Collin Metzgar (133 lbs), Ryan Wheeler (157 lbs) and Kash Anderson (197 lbs).
Six institutions are represented among the 2022-23 RMAC All-Conference rosters. Adams State leads the way with six selections, while Western Colorado captured five spots. Chadron State and Colorado Mesa each accounted for a trio of honorees, followed by Colorado School of Mines with two positions and Colorado State University Pueblo with one selection.
Following regional competition, the RMAC will have a combined 21 wrestlers competing among the 10 weight classes at the 2023 NCAA DII Wrestling Championships, which begin Friday, March 10, before wrapping up on Saturday, March 11. The national championships will be hosted inside U.S. Cellular Arena in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
