Melissa Moreni and Lexye Wood Named RMAC Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs’ Melissa Moreni and Colorado School of Mines’ Lexye Wood are the Week Four Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, the league announced Wednesday.
 
Women’s Track Athlete of the Week: Melissa Moreni, UCCS – Jr. – Helena, Mont.
Moreni clocked a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles at the Jo Meaker Classic in Multi in Canyon, Texas last weekend. She claimed an altitude-adjusted time of 13.72 seconds in the 14th-person field but was the first NCAA Division II competitor to finish the race. The sophomore’s latest effort sits fourth on the NCAA DII performance list and ranks first in the conference.
 
Moreni claims the Women’s Track Athlete of the Week honor after impressive performances in the 100m hurdle last weekend. In the 100m hurdles, she completed the race in 13.72 seconds and led a string of four Mountain Lion hurdlers within the top 10. Moreni’s personal best time set a new UCCS record in the event and was only .28 off the first-place finisher.

Women’s Field Athlete of the Week: Lexye Wood, Colorado School of Mines – Sr. – Helena, Mont.
Wood claimed a second-place finish in the long jump and tied for fourth in the high jump at the Kit Mayer Classic in Golden, Colo., last weekend. The senior set a program record with a mark of 6.07m (19-.7 ft) in the long jump before clearing 1.63m for a share of fourth in the high jump. Her latest effort in the long jump was an NCAA Division II provisional mark.
 
The Helena, Mont., native dominated the field throughout the weekend where she claimed two top-five finishes. In the long jump, Wood was the first NCAA DII athlete to place behind an NCAA DI athlete and in a field of 18 athletes. After fouling on her first attempt, Wood jumped to her winning effort of 6.07m, a mark that was .29 behind the first place finisher. She currently ranks first in the conference in the event by 19cm and her current effort is No. 8 on the NCAA DII performance list.
 
The Mountain Lions will now split up and attend the Cal State LA Twilight Open and the Bryan Clay Invitational. The Cal State LA Twilight Open will take place on Thursday, April 13, in Los Angeles, Calif., on the CSULA Jesse Owens Track. The Bryan Clay Invitational is a three-day event that will begin on Thursday, April 13, in Azusa, Calif., at APU Cougar Athletic Stadium.
 
The Orediggers will also split up this weekend at the Bryan Clay Invite and the Maverick Invite. The Bryan Clay Invitational is a three-day event that will begin on Thursday, April 13, while the Maverick Invite will begin on Saturday, April 15, in Grand Junction Colo.
