Dillon Powell, Dakota Abbott Named RMAC Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado School of Mines’ Dillon Powell and University of Colorado Colorado Springs’ Dakota Abbott are the Week Three Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, the league announced Wednesday.
 
Powell claims RMAC Track Athlete of the Week after breaking the Mines record in the 5,000-meter event with an outdoor personal-best time of 13:30.93 at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., last weekend. The junior marked an NCAA Division II provisional time with the effort and was the only NCAA Division II competitor in the field.
 
The Orediggers will now host the Kit Mayer Classic, a two-day event, beginning on Friday, April 7, in Golden, Colo.
 
Abbott claims Field Athlete of the Week after putting forth an impressive performance in the triple jump at the CSU Pueblo Open last weekend. The redshirt senior earned a first-place finish with a NCAA DII provisional mark of 15.62m (51-3.0 ft) to overcome a talented field of jumpers that included all conference opponents.
 
The Mountain Lions will now head to Canyon, Texas, to compete at the Jo Meeker Classic & Multi and will be hosted by West Texas A&M. The meet will be a three-day event beginning on Thursday, April 6.
 
Men’s Track Athlete of the Week: Dillon Powell, Colorado School of Mines – Jr. – Colorado Springs, Colo.
Powell is the RMAC Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week after a fourth-place finish at the Stanford Invitational with a time of 13:30.93. The junior currently holds the nation’s best time on the latest NCAA DII performance list and also leads all RMAC 5k competitors this season by a 21-second margin. The Colorado Springs, Colo., native’s latest 5k mark also stands fourth all-time in NCAA Division II.

Men’s Field Athlete of the Week: Dakota Abbott, UCCS – R-Sr. – Amherst, Neb.
Abbott is the RMAC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week after a first-place finish in the triple jump last weekend.  Of his four jumps, his winning mark of 15.62m came on his third effort after an initial leap of 15.27m. His latest effort places him third on this season’s NCAA DII performance list and first in the conference.
