Mavericks Claim 2023 RMAC Baseball Tournament Title

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Mavericks earn the 2023 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament title after a 21-3 win over No. 3 Regis. CMU registered 54 hits, nine home runs and scored 49 runs on the way to their first RMAC Tournament title since 2019. Conrad Villafuerte was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
 
The Mavericks stepped on the gas right away and never let go recording at least one run in ever inning besides the fifth. A big nine-run second inning was highlighted by a grand slam from Stevenson Reynolds that put the Mavericks up by seven. As a team, the Mavericks registered five home runs in the championship game by Reynolds, Brent Renteria, Paul Schoenfeld, Caleb Thomason and an inside the park homer by Villafuerte.
 
Liam Hohenstein got the ball for the Mavericks and after giving up a run in the first settled in and fanned five batters. The freshman went five innings and gave up just two runs, two hits and four walks in his eighth win of the season.
 
The Rangers scored first as CJ Difiglia singled up the middle allowing Zach Daudet to score. Levi Padilla was able to produce a run for his team with a sacrifice fly to center field. Michael May highlighted the Regis pitching staff as the fifth pitcher used in the game, but silenced the Mavericks offense allowing just one hit and no runs. Regis finished the season producing the most runs (51) and hits (61) throughout the four-day tournament.
 
Villafuerte was named the tournament’s MVP after going 10-for-13 with nine RBI, two doubles and one home run during the week. The senior had a big day at the plate on Friday in the Mavericks 20-10 win over Metropolitan State University of Denver batting .666 in the game.
 
This weeks tournament consisted of 245 hits, 200 runs, 48 home runs and 18 stolen bases. The Mavericks hit the most doubles (12)  and had the most stolen bases (8) of the tournament while MSU Denver collected 14 home runs throughout the week.
 
Anthony Durbano, Harrison Rodgers, Julian Boyd joined Hohenstein and Villafuerte on the 2023 All-Tournament team. Zach Daudet, Blake Shephardson and Adam Paniagua represent the Rangers on the roster and are joined by Colorado State University Pueblo’s Christian Casteneda and MSU Denver’s jake Williams.
