RMAC Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Major Award Announced

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference announced its 20223Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Major Awards and All-Conference rosters Tuesday. Colorado Mesa’s Sierra Arceneaux was named the Women’s Track Athlete of the Year, while Chadron State’s Kyla Sawvelll and Western Colorado’s Allison Beasley were named the RMAC Women’s Field Athlete of the Year and Freshman of the Year, respectively. UCCS head coach Ross Fellows is the RMAC Women’s Coach of the Year.
 
Arceneaux claims the league’s Track Athlete of the Year award for the second consecutive seasonafter securing conference titles in the 100-meter and 200m dash events, for which she was named an all-conference first team honoree. In the 100m event she crossed the finish line with a time of 11.61, before earning her second first-place finish of the meet in the 200m with a time of 23.51. The senior stands fifth in the nation in the 200m dash following her 23.33 finish at the 2023 Loper Twilight (May 13).
 
Sawvell captures Women’s Field Athlete of the Year after a trio of podium finishes at the RMAC Outdoor Championships in Chadron, Neb. The senior placed first in the hammer throw with a mark of 57.28m, before her second-place finish in the discus throw with an effort of 44.22m. Sawvell finished the conference championships with a third-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 14.58m. She currently ranks second in the nation in the hammer throw with a mark of 63.14m, which she completed at the 2023 Loper Twilight.
 
Beasley is the RMAC Women’s Freshman of the Year after a first-place finish at the RMAC Outdoor Championships in the steeplechase with a time of 10:34.41. The Mountaineers distance runner registered a  pair of personal bests at the 2023 Bryan Clay Invitational earlier this season, a 4:27.84 in the 1,500m race and a 16:23.07 in the 5,000m run. Her time ifnthe 5,000m stands 15th on the NCAA Division II performance list.
 
UCCS head coach Ross Fellows was named the RMAC Women’s Coach of the Year after leading the Mountain Lions to their third consecutive outdoor conference championship. Fellows was also named Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year earlier today. He will be sending multiple athletes from his women’s program to partake in the national meet, which will be hosted in Pueblo, Colo., beginning Thursday, May 25.
 
RMAC Outdoor Track and Field Major Awards are voted on by the league’s head coaches. Coaches are not permitted to vote for themselves or their student-athletes. The league’s all-conference teams are determined based on finishes at the RMAC Outdoor Championships. The top-three finishers in each individual race are named first-team selections, while the fourth, fifth and sixth-place finishers are tabbed second-team honorees. For relay events, the first-place team is named to the first team and the second-place team is named to the second team.
