Colorado Mesa Leads After Day One of 2024 RMAC Swimming and Diving Championships
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa men and women both lead their respective team competitions after the first day of action of the 2024 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at El Pomar Natatorium in Grand Junction, Colo., on Tuesday, Feb. 13.
The championship meet started off with immediate high energy, as the 800-yard freestyle relay providing the fireworks. The women’s heat was a wire-to-wire race for the Mavericks, who won the event with a time of 7:19.44. The team of Ada Qunell, Katerina Matoskova, Benedict Nagy and Lauren White also broke the previous RMAC meet record of 7:21.77, set by Colorado Mesa at last year’s championships.
In the men’s race, a tight battle between Colorado Mesa and Oklahoma Christian took place, ending with a narrow Mavericks victory. Kuba Kiszczak, Aziz Ghaffari, Dejan Urbanek and Ben Sampson put up a time of 6:30.29, edging out the Eagles’ second-place time of 6:30.73. Like their female counterparts, Colorado Mesa’s time also set the new RMAC meet record that was set at the 2023 competition.
With one event completed, Colorado Mesa leads the men’s team standings with 58 total points, followed by Oklahoma Christian with 48 points and Simon Fraser (44 points).
After the 800-yard freestyle relay, the Maverick women are in first place with 64 points, with Simon Fraser (54 points) in second place and Oklahoma Christian and Colorado School of Mines (48 points) tied for third place.
The action at the 2024 RMAC Swimming and Diving Championships will continue from El Pomar Natatorium on Wednesday, Feb. 14, with preliminary heats beginning at 10 a.m. MT.
