Fort Lewis, Colorado Mesa and Colorado School of Mines Represent the RMAC at the 2024 NCAA DII Men’s Basketball Tournament
Canyon, TEXAS – Three Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference institutions are represented in the 2024 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Tournament. Fort Lewis holds the highest seed out of the RMAC representatives with the No. 2 overall seed, while Colorado Mesa and Colorado School of Mines hold the No. 3 and No. 5 seeds, respectively. The tournament is set to start on Friday, March 15, with the three RMAC institutions seeing action on the 16th.
In the opening round of the tournament, the RMAC Tournament Champions, Fort Lewis, will face off against the 7-seed Lubbock Christian. Colorado Mesa will battle against the 6-seed, Eastern New Mexico, and Colorado School of Mines will start the tournament with a hotly contested 4-5 matchup against Dallas Baptist.
#2 Fort Lewis vs. # 7 Lubbock Christian
The Skyhawks look to keep their postseason momentum going after claiming the 2024 RMAC Men’s Basketball Championship. The 28-3 Skyhawks are averaging 86.3 points per game while holding their opponents to 72.6 points. Fort Lewis is led by junior guard Obi Agbim, who is averaging 15.4 points per game on 44% and 37% shooting splits. Agbim is not the only bucket-getter on the Fort Lewis squad, as the Skyhawks have three other student-athletes averaging double-digit points. The 2-7 matchup will be no walk in the park for the Skyhawks, as the Chaps boast a pesky defense that held opponents to 69.2 points per game this season. The two sides will tip-off at 1:30 PM MT on Saturday, March 16.
#3 Colorado Mesa vs. #7 Eastern New Mexico
Colorado Mesa aims to bounce back following their RMAC Tournament Championship loss to the Skyhawks. The Mavericks are led by the RMAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Year, Trevor Baskin, who is averaging 17.9 points per game, 8.1 rebounds and 3.9 assists. As a team, the Mavericks are shooting 50% from the field this season, averaging 86.6 points per game, while holding opponents to 42% and 73.4 points. Colorado Mesa has their work cut out for them on Saturday, as Eastern New Mexico possesses a plethora of offensive firepower. The Greyhounds are averaging 90 points per game on the offensive end this season but let up an average of 81 points to their opposition on a per-game basis. Tip-off is set for 11:00 AM MT on Saturday.
#4 Dallas Baptist vs. #5 Colorado School of Mines
In the hotly contested 4-5 matchup, the Orediggers aim to upset Dallas Baptist University in the round of 64. The Orediggers are led by redshirt senior Majok Deng, who is averaging 17.1 points per game on 43% shooting. Head coach Pryor Orser is no stranger to the heightened energy of March basketball, as he has earned 12 NCAA Tournament berths heading into this year. Out of the three teams representing the RMAC in the NCAA Tournament, the Orediggers proudly boast the best defense, holding their opposition to 69.9 points, 3.9 blocks and 5.2 steals per game. The Oredigger defense will be put to the test throughout the matchup, as the Patriots average 88.5 points per game. DBU and Colorado School of Mines will face off in the primetime spot on Saturday, with the game set to start at 6:30 MT.
