UCCS Named RMAC Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Preseason Favorite
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs is the preseason favorite heading into the 2024 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Men’s Outdoor Track & Field season, the league announced Monday. The Mountain Lions earn this distinction after claiming 135 points and five first-place votes in the 2024 RMAC Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The preseason poll is voted on by the league’s 13 head coaches. Coaches are not permitted to vote for their own program.
After claiming victory at the 2023 RMAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the Mountain Lions earn the nod as preseason favorites. Led by head coach Ross Fellows, the Mountain Lions have become an RMAC powerhouse, winning three consecutive RMAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships and putting together a top-25 finish at last year’s NCAA Division II Championship. After a second-place finish at the 2024 RMAC Indoor Championships, UCCS is hoping to regain its spot atop the RMAC podium at the conclusion of the 2024 Outdoor Track & Field season.
Colorado School of Mines checks in at No. 2 in the preseason poll with 128 points and three first-place votes. The Orediggers are building momentum heading into the outdoor season as they claim first place at the 2024 RMAC Indoor Track & Field Championships with 145 points. With their momentum building, the Orediggers are looking to improve on their fourth-place finish at last season’s RMAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Colorado School of Mines’ squad is headlined by a talented group of distance runners, with Loic Scomparin leading the way in that regard. Scomparin scored 26 points for the Orediggers at the 2024 RMAC Indoor Championships and secured the Men’s Athlete of the Meet honor.
Colorado Mesa rounds out the top three with 126 points and four first-place votes. Head coach Brad Gamble leads the way for the Mavericks in 2024. Gamble is coming off a successful indoor season, where he guided the Mavs to a third-place finish at the RMAC Indoor Championships and earned himself the RMAC Men’s Coach of the Year honor. Under Gamble’s stewardship, the Mavericks have continuously improved each year.
Adams State claims the fourth spot in the preseason poll with 106 total points and one first-place vote, while Colorado State University Pueblo checks in at No. 5 with 101 points. Western Colorado (93 points), Chadron State (74 points), Black Hills State (53 points), Metropolitan State University of Denver (52 points) and Colorado Christian (49 points) round out the league’s top 10 positions.
Fort Lewis (46 points), South Dakota Mines (37 points) and Westminster (14 points) round out the final three spots in the 2024 RMAC Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
The 2024 RMAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships will start on Friday, April 26, on the campus of Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction, Colo.
