Colorado Mesa’s Trevor Baskin Tabbed the 2024 RMAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Year
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado Mesa’s Trevor Baskin is the 2023-24 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Year, the league announced Wednesday. Baskin is accompanied by teammate Mac Riniker and head coach Mike DeGeorge as RMAC Defensive Player of the Year and RMAC Coach of the Year, respectively. Colorado School of Mines’ Alex Romack takes home RMAC Freshman of the Year honors for the Orediggers. The four individual awards were announced alongside the 2023-24 RMAC Men’s Basketball All-Conference teams. RMAC individual awards and all-conference rosters are voted on by the league’s 15 head coaches. Coaches are not permitted to vote for their own players.
Baskin earns the league’s top honor after leading the Mavericks to a first-place finish in the RMAC regular season, garnering Colorado Mesa the league’s No. 1 seed and heading into the 2024 RMAC Men’s Basketball Tournament. The redshirt junior paced the Mavericks all season long and leads his squad in points (17.9), rebounds (7.9), assists (3.9) and blocks (1.2), which all rank in the top five players in the RMAC for each category. Behind Baskin, the Mavericks are ranked No. 5 nationally, according to the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches Division II poll.
Colorado School of Mines’ Alex Romack earns RMAC Men’s Basketball Freshman of the Year honors after an imposing debut season for the Orediggers season. Romack has started in 30 games for the Orediggers and is currently averaging 9.2 points per game, 6.9 rebounds and 1.0 assists, all while shooting 66.3% from the field. His defense has been a key component to the Orediggers’ success this year and he has racked up 22 blocks and 18 steals.
Mac Riniker claims his second consecutive RMAC Defensive Player of the Year nod after spearheading a Colorado Mesa defense that limits opponents to 73.4 points per game. The redshirt junior played and started in 22 games for the Mavericks during the regular season, averaging 25 minutes of action per appearance. Riniker currently ranks fourth in the RMAC with 45 steals this season, an average of 2.0 per game, and stands seventh in the league with 22 blocks.
After guiding the Mavericks to the outright regular-season title, DeGeorge secures his second consecutive RMAC Coach of the Year accolade. In his sixth season with the Mavericks, DeGeorge has earned his fifth RMAC postseason berth after pushing his team to a 25-3 regular-season record. Under DeGeorge’s leadership, the Mavericks boast a .955 conference win percentage and a .897 overall win percentage this season.
Of the 20 student-athletes recognized on the all-conference teams, Colorado Mesa and Fort Lewis lead the way with four honorees each. Chadron State, Colorado School of Mines, Metropolitan State University of Denver and South Dakota Mines each account for two honorees. Adams State, Black Hills State, Colorado State University Pueblo and Regis filled out the remaining all-conference roster spots with one selection apiece.
