GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Top-seeded Colorado Mesa and second-seeded Regis will play for a tournament title on Saturday, May 11, after Friday’s play at the 2024 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament. The Mavericks rode an absolute gem on the mound to surge into the final, while Regis bounced back through the elimination bracket to secure their spot in tomorrow’s showdown. Pitching dominated across the three games, as each winning squad got a quality start from their starter.

#1 Colorado Mesa 7, #2 Regis 1
Liam Hohenstein went the distance for the Mavericks, sending them into yet another tournament championship matchup. The sophomore was brilliant on the bump, striking out nine in his complete game. His offense pieced together a 3-run fourth inning after the Rangers took the lead, and never trailed after that. Jonathon Gonzalez put forth a 3-for-4 effort to continue his torrid hitting in this year’s tournament. The CMU infielder has a redhot .692 batting average in three games and contributed an RBI to Friday’s victory. Regis moved into a win-or-go-home night game with the defeat, fighting for their tournament title hopes.

#3 Colorado School of Mines 4, #6 CSU Pueblo 1
The Orediggers rode a quality start from Ben Schoneman and a long relief appearance from Marcus Lee to advance to the final elimination game of the bracket. Both arms got help from the defense, each getting key plays to keep the ThunderWolves from mounting a comeback. As for the offense, Colorado School of Mines flashed some home run power, going back-to-back over the left field fence. Luke Folsom highlighted the early inning surge with a double and his round tripper and ended with a 4-for-5 showing. The Orediggers moved into Friday’s night game against Regis, while the Pack concluded their 2024 campaign.

#2 Regis 12, #3 Colorado School of Mines 2
Regis used two five-run outbursts to advance into the tournament championship in Friday’s nightcap. The Rangers batted around in the third and sent 11 to the plate in the eighth to power them ahead. That run support was plenty for Wyatt Zsidisin, who dazzled on the mound. The junior went eight innings, allowed two runs and punched out five. The righty also got help from his infielders, inducing two double plays to thwart off any signs of an Oredigger comeback. Luke Folsom added two more RBIs to his tournament ledger in likely his final game wearing a Mines uniform.

Saturday’s championship game is set for a 1 p.m. MT first pitch from Grand Junction, Colo., between the Mavericks and Rangers. Should Regis knock off CMU, the if necessary game would occur at 5 p.m. MT.
