COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – For a program that has reached the highest mountain tops, there is one name that stands above the rest for the Fort Lewis men’s soccer program. John Cunliffe was an unstoppable force during his time with Skyhawks men’s soccer and he accomplished each of his individual successes while leading the program to its first NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer National Championship in 2005.

Throughout a decorated four-year career with the Skyhawks, Cunliffe will now join the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Hall of Fame as a member of the 2024 class. Following his induction into the Fort Lewis Hall of Fame in 2023, Cunliffe continues to bolster his trophy case with this latest recognition after being named the most valuable player on the RMAC All-Century team in 2009.

As a RMAC student-athlete, he was crowned the RMAC Men’s Soccer Player of the Year for three consecutive seasons, 2004, 2005 and 2006. In each of his final three seasons, he was also named a United Soccer Coaches All-American, earning second-team honors in 2004 and first-team honors in 2005 and 2006. He is one of 20 players in NCAA DII history to record 40 goals and 40 assists in a career and is the most recent on the list to do so.

Cunliffe’s name is littered among categories in the NCAA DII Men’s Soccer record book, where he stands tied for fifth all-time with 212 career points, which also ranks first in RMAC history. His 75 career goals stand second overall in the RMAC record book and first all-time in FLC program history. Further, he ranks fourth all-time in NCAA DII history, first in the RMAC, with 62 career assists over 82 appearances.

Upon finishing his career with the Skyhawks in the 2006 season, Cunliffe was drafted seventh overall in the first round of the 2007 Major League Soccer Entry Draft by Chivas USA. He ultimately played seven seasons at the professional level before retiring in April 2013.

Cunliffe will now be enshrined into the RMAC Hall of Fame during the 2024 RMAC Hall of Fame Ceremony and Awards Banquet on Thursday, July 11, inside the Colorado Springs Marriott in Colorado Springs, Colo. Doors will open at 5 p.m. MT with the awards and induction ceremony to begin at 6 p.m.
